Dear Paris, A toast to you and the resilience I know you have. You will rebuild this iconic cathedral because there far too many people in this world who still want to go see it. Love Lock Bridge Paris. by Ghostfive on Flickr.
Paris was attacked, so many people died, it makes me want to cry. So many completely innocent people killed in a very random way. I don’t mean to disrespect them or make their death any less tragic.
But what about everyone else?
Why can we change our Facebook profile pictures to the France flag, but we’ve never had the little Syrian or Pakistani flag? We all love Malala but don’t listen when she ways to help without sending guns and soldiers. We are outraged when the innocent people in Europe are killed by ISIS, but our own soldiers kill hundreds more innocent people when trying to track ISIS down. People are blaming Muslims and Syrian refugees for these attacks and not realizing that THEY are the victims. For us, an attack this awful gets cute little watermarks and an international outcry. But when they face this every day, we don’t care. It’s almost normalized. “Oh, another thousand people killed in Pakistan? A mosque was blown up? Oh well.”
I can’t help but feel the reason we are so scared for Paris is because they’re good innocent white folks like us. If the middle easterners get killed, so be it. It’s normal. Better then than us. But if Paris is attacked, that means we could be next.
Our concern and prayers for Paris are in good intention, but revealing how unintentionally racist and heartless we have been. Our silence to those suffering is suddenly screaming. Something needs to change.
