My thoughts on Parties and identities in general
Whenever I hear someone identify a certain way- whether it be democrat, republican, feminist, anti feminist, etc. I can’t help but wonder what about the group that made them align themselves to the identity.
What I mean is, a group identity has a core set of beliefs, yet most of the people that call themselves democrats, for example, do not agree with 100% of the party’s platform. I’ve even met one who if they hadn’t told me they were democrat, I would’ve guessed they were republican.
So what is it about these group identities attract people to labeling themselves a certain way? There is stuff that they disagree with, why even bother labeling yourself that way?
Another thing that bugs me about group identities is the conversations you try to have with people labeled under these terms. You would assume that someone identifying as a feminist would agree with feminist theory, yet all feminists I have talked to reject traditional feminist theory in substitute for their own- most of which doesn’t even follow feminist theory. So what unites these feminists if they don’t agree with the core ideology of feminism? And how do you even have a debate with them when you bring up the issues with feminist theory, and they say ‘oh I don’t believe that’?
