it-is-i-zim replied to your ask post: This is just my opinion but Ostrander's revamp of him was the worst thing thing to happen to him character wise. Fans of Boomerang are sometimes straight up harassed for what Ostrander did to his character. Like on one hand, one of the reasons why he was on the suicide squad for so long and we see him AT ALL is because of Ostrander but I'm sick of being called racist because of how my guy was written by Ostrander.

It also made me kinda dislike Tim Drake fans but I also get that for ages their only exposure to Boomer was that comic. And the Knight Terrors: Robin comic bringing that comic back into the established canon did no favors either seeing that it was through the eyes of someone who wasn’t even there. An artistic choice for sure, but it’s also made Tim Drake fans feral about how AWFUL Digger is.

Unfortunately this is more of a fan problem than a writing one. I definitely sympathize with people who love pre-Crisis Digger but hate his post-Crisis self, because modern Digger can be a lot. But people being jerks to other fans because of it is 100% a problem with fandom, and it's got to stop. There's nothing wrong with liking problematic characters as long as you're honest about their flaws, because they aren't real people and they haven't actually hurt anyone real…and just because you like them doesn't mean you approve of everything they do.

It's also fine for people to dislike a character or avoid other fans if they make you uncomfortable for any reason, but it shouldn't get to the point of mistreating a real person over fictional stories and liking/disliking fictional things.

(To make things extremely personal for a moment, it took me over 25 years to figure out why I gravitate to unpopular villains: it was only once I understood that I was the family scapegoat that I realized I like unpopular villains because I'd been considered one/treated like one my entire life. People can have their reasons for liking villains and problematic characters that have nothing to do with the shittiest thing(s) the character(s) have done.)

I must say I’m not fond of him because of that and therefore didn’t mind the kinda bad revamp back in Suicide Squad (2016) #47

The question was "the most common way they're written badly", and while that was weird and creepy, it was thankfully just a brief anomaly in the Supergirl book (that's why his strange Rebirth revamp didn't get my pick; it was just one story). I found Owen's intelligence and skill level varied wildly throughout his appearances, and sometimes he was competent and sometimes he was a clueless dumbass. He seemed reasonably smart in his debut story, so IMO him being an idiot was the primary example of being written badly.

Yeah, that's fair. That one's a problem too, though the one I mentioned bothers me more so I guess that's why I went with it. Truthfully I think both versions are manifestations of sexist beliefs about women, one benevolent ("women are morally better than men") and one misogynist ("women are crazy bitches, especially ex-girlfriends" -- and on that note, I really hate what was done to Magenta by Waid and Johns. She should have been included on the previous list).

It would be good if DC strove for some middle ground between the two, because Lisa should be flawed but not constantly jonesing to slash people's faces.

I know one of the writers of Damian's solo series was talking about having him eat meat again because it was culturally appropriate on his mother's side, but I didn't actually read the series and have no idea if he followed through with that. DC's got a habit of having characters flirt with vegetarianism and then walking it back for various reasons…Superman and Poison Ivy are other examples. I guess that's par for the course with characters written by different creators who've got different interpretations.

Probably not long -- there are three episodes left this season, and now Luthor and Helen Villigan are gunning for it so Darkseid likely isn't far behind. That plot and Lisa's mum will (presumably) have to be dealt with before the season ends…and it'll be interesting to find out whether the show continues beyond that point.

I was wondering, do you know what other languages The Rogues can speak besides English?

You know, I honestly can't think of any aside from some presumed possibilities.  It's a decent bet that James can speak Italian, but we've never seen him do it, and I find it difficult to believe that Kadabra's era speaks anything recognizable as English.  Tony Gambi might speak Italian too.  Hartley might possibly speak ASL, but there's a very good chance he doesn't...and if he does, it'd be something learned in adulthood because his parents would have been strongly against it.  I also wouldn't be surprised if Al can read Latin and maybe Greek on account of his interest in alchemy and old books, but this is pure speculation on my part.  

So I'm going to say that there aren't any known other languages I can think of, but there's at least a couple of solid bets (James and Kadabra) and maybe some other possibilities.  And, of course, others could have hidden talents we don't know about, like Lisa's mysterious ability to lip-read which was never mentioned again :>

Agreed, her cheery smile really stands out and is what made me notice her there so quickly!  Digger looks so, so grumpy with the situation -- maybe he doesn't like the long wait, or maybe Len's purposely ignoring him by burying his nose in the newspaper :D

He does, but I doubt James would be wearing someone else's mask in a medical clinic.  We've seen Roscoe with weirdly miscoloured blondish hair before, so it's probably something like that.  Or like Hartley’s ever-changing red or blond hair.

Good to know, thank you.  Have to admit that I don't know a lot about Man-Bat and have only read one other mini because Murmur was in it, but it's always good to see lesser-loved characters get some attention :)

He was trying to stop Wally/Famine without killing him, so in that sense it was kinda-sorta merciful -- but ultimately I agree, the issue was such a depressing experience.  I can’t imagine too many people want to see that happen.

Oh, could be Calculator, since he was in the previous issue.  His presence wouldn't make any sense, but there's no reason it couldn't be him.  Mason would make a ton of more sense, but it seems like he's been forgotten :\

It was a hilarious story -- Barry and Jay were thrilled to watch Batman spar with (and get beaten by) Wildcat.  Then Batman told them he’d seen them even though they were operating at super speed, and they looked so guilty :D

Yeah, the two of them don't necessarily have the most healthy of goals, and in this case they definitely don't.  It seems pretty clear to me that death and Hell significantly traumatized and darkened Roscoe; he did admit that it was very traumatic, and he became much more of an a-hole after death.  And of course Lisa went totally off the deep end when he died, so it did her mental health no favours either.  If a time traveller was trying to keep both from making terrible decisions, the most useful change would be to prevent Roscoe from dying...they'd both be so much happier and more emotionally healthy people!  It's kind of surprising (and very endearing) that they were as functional and loving as they were at this time, considering both had a ton of emotional baggage.  And I'd think you'd start seeing humans differently once you've spent months or years as a disembodied phantom and know you're not really alive anymore, even if you pretend to be.  It'd be a very strange existence, and probably very lonely.

Heh, I like that!  And the costume colours are pretty odd; he's still got the quilted tunic, but yeah, it's like the colourist confused him with MM and it's jarring.  It could be a way to distinguish the Als if both do get brought into the story, but that seems an unlikely motivation.  And I guess FP Roscoe does have a reddish tinge to his hair, although I still perceive it as mostly brown.  Alvin's hair is distinctly red to me in this issue...though it must be noted that I've got terrible vision :]

Yeah, it's hard to say what happened, so I hope the subject is addressed.  I believe pre-Flashpoint events are mostly supposed to be intact, but there are also some notable examples to the contrary (Digger and Owen are good ones) so it's not a given.  The thing is, Alvin or a red-headed Dr Alchemy occasionally showed up even after he was destroyed/absorbed, so even before Flashpoint things weren't consistent.  I've kind of wondered if the Stone re-created him a few times afterward or if it was purely an art error.

Oh yes, agreed.  The dialogue could have gone to either of them and he does physically look like James.  It makes a solid argument for never letting Axel genuinely age in the comics, because he'd probably grow into something similar to James and then there'd be few differences between them.  At that point there'd be no reason to keep both of them around, so either one would have to go/die or one would have to be significantly altered...which probably nobody wants to see.

He certainly tried to!  I can imagine the humour potential of him living as a weird squatter in the basement and getting up to shenanigans, but she'd probably find it far less funny for obvious reasons :>

Oh, agreed.  There are plenty of things to criticize about his work, as can be said about pretty much any writer, but there's also no question that his handling of the Rogues is why they have so many fans.  I miss this Len too, and many of his versions of the Rogues.
