does it make her a bad friend if   ,   before she asks any follow up questions   ,   she has to wonder if this is once again about their silver blond housemate   ?    has to wonder if she really wants to ask   ,   if they’ll go on to spend the next majority part of the hour talking about a boy and an infatuation that jane can’t possibly grasp   ?     of course it’s selfish of her   ,   but maybe this is the part of herself that lent to this sorting to begin with.   maybe she should’ve leaned into it a long time ago instead of sucking it up every time.

she certainly wasn’t rash enough to come anywhere close to gryffindor   ,   though   ,   and there’s probably a good reason for that too.   ❛     you don’t suck  !   why   ....  why do you think you do   ?     ❜    the question is more than what she expected to ask   ,   but sometimes her mouth goes haywire.   it hasn’t happened in a while   ,   so it really was about time.   as if that wasn’t enough   ,   tentatively   ,   she continues.   ❛     did something happen   ?     ❜

he’s exceptionally talented at tuning out this particular tone of hers.   it’s one she often uses   ,   laced with a poison that he’s long since become immune to and only really works against those outside of their inner circle.    the edge within isn’t unfamiliar    ,   but it does strike him as far less common than her general sarcasm has always been.    it’s a unique thing that brings him to hold an arm out in front of her    ,   an effective stop to her movements not two step from green flames.  

❛     you are aware we don’t have to go back to yours   ,   yes   ?     ❜     not to say their list of options is long at all   ,   either.   his own home though large and open contains an emptiness that theo hasn’t much had a chance to get used to on his own   ,   let alone enough to invite someone else into it.   it’s an odd thing   ,   given that theo can’t remember a single time him and his father ever rejoiced in being in the same room together.  the same space at all.   somehow   ,   still   ,   it’s a different sort of alone knowing his father’s been carted off to prison.    

❛    draco’ll be a right twat if we show up unannounced   ,   but he won’t make us leave.     zabini  ,   too.  his mum likes me.     ❜    he sees her hesitation   ,   the stop and start of her step closer to the fire.    ❛     i don’t mind either way   ,   but you’re acting a bit like i’m leading you to your untimely death.     ❜

❛     you ... seem happy   ?     ❜     which in itself is true   ,   and strange.    it’s not strange that the former slytherin seems to have carved out a corner for herself   ,   green of overgrown plants where snakes used to be.    that bit she’d gotten over back when she’d first discovered the place at all.   it’s not the scene that’s unusual  —  as a matter of fact   ,   it’s one she’s become increasingly familiar with as time has passed.    against her better judgment and at some times she would dare say against her will   ,   she’s come to know the girl behind the counter too.

what she doesn’t know is this frantic tone   ,   dark eyes wide and pointed directly at her person as though she’s said something fatally incorrect.   as if sensing her mistake   ,   though she’s unsure where it lies   ,   she attempts to backtrack her confusion.    ❛     you don’t seem happy   ?     ❜     no change.     ❛     you do.     ❜     no change.       ❛     i’m sorry   ,   pansy   ,   i’m not quite sure what’s going on.   are you alright   ?     ❜

❛     over what   ?     ❜    it’s not oblivious   ,   but uncaring   ,   the steady tone of voice.   not presently without distraction   ,   expanse of fair skin under layers of green and black are enough to drive any reasonable guy’s thoughts blank   ,   and harry’s never even claimed to be reasonable.   he doesn’t see so much as feel when her back hits the wall   ,   cornered somewhere dark and away from prying eyes.   though   ,   personally   ,   he couldn’t care less who pried.

one hand has found way to the small of her back   ,   slid under shirt before it occurs to him.   the obvious answer.   he leaves nip at her neck before the slight shift back.   not even a step away   ,   only enough to pin her with a look bordering on irritation.     ❛     what , about you pining over blondie   ?     ❜   lips turned sharp   ,   made to cut.     ❛     pans   ,   it’s physically painful watching you embarrass yourself around him.   the only thing i’m jealous of is whoever doesn’t have to see it.     ❜

❛     much too exhausting to attempt before breakfast.     ❜   idle is the glance over shoulder where a huddle of others he couldn’t possibly place names to seem circled around whomever his housemate’s just sent running.   it is early   ,   but he supposes she’s always been high achieving. he shuffles over only slightly to make space on his left   ,   draco wrapped in some conversation with zabini on his other side.   rather uncaring   ,   certainly not with the air of anyone intending on reporting to the nearest teacher.    ❛     i see you’ve started your agenda to bring the entire hogwarts youth to tears early today.   dare i ask what he did to deserve it  ?     ❜

❛     it may shock you to know   ,    but i’d gathered as much.     ❜    a vision of frazzled energy   ,   strands of dark hair escaping the confines of ponytail without her permission and eyes wide.   her huffed irritation   ,   so long suffering it’s as though pansy’s just informed her she’s resurrected the dark lord personally as opposed to denting hermione’s own afternoon plans.   honestly   ,   she’d have thought the slytherin would have an assortment of ways to occupy herself easier than going out of her way to get in hermione’s.   a naive assumption on her part   ,   she’d be unsurprised to learn there was steam coming out of ears with heat that floods veins.    ❛     bit sad if you’ve got nothing better to do than interfere with my time   ,   don’t you think ?     ❜

❛     you’ve startled him   !     ❜    uncharacteristically accusing is tone as she kneels   ,   nose to beak with a chicken that’s just set lavender curtains on fire.   hands held out   ,   palms up   ,   quietly consoling.    they suppose he’s not technically supposed to be in the house   ,  but it would be unfair to lay blame on the bird when it was pansy who left the door open.   even that is short lived   ,   out of mind once she’s knees on floor.   she doesn’t dare move   ,   not yet   ,   but as an afterthought is glance to other when the room grows warmer.   ❛     put that out   ,   please.   i was fond of those.     ❜
