#SantaMarta’s #ParqueBolivar (originally the Plaza Major, with several names since) is astonishingly open at one end to the infinity of the Caribbean horizon. A military barracks closed off the view for a while from the end of the C18th but thankfully it’s gone. Dominating the square is the huge #Brutalist pile of the Banco de la República’s Cultural Centre (architect 1987), with the little Customs House next to it (1730, restored 2014 as the Gold Museum), and the golden yellow Mayor’s Office (Alcadia) astonishingly built in 1930. Just up the street is the church of San Francisco of Assisi in its plaza, with its 1597 facade (the church behind was rebuilt in 1964 after a fire caused by an altar candle).
