Bird Profile: Conures!

If you are looking into getting a parrot, you should do your research before making a purchase, as all parrots have different personalities, levels of independence, demands, and abilities. 

Caique

size: Medium,

noise: Not too bad! Caiques don't vocalize as often as many parrots of similar stature, including conures and some Amazons. However, they do still shriek from time to time, and often squeel with excitement especially when they are young

talking ability: Not good. Caiques are not known as good talkers, but you can expect them to mimic household noises and possibly learn a few words.

lifespan: ranging from 15 to 30 years average, depending on the bird’s health and living conditions

Independence: a good rule of thumb to remember is that the smaller the bird, the more independence they will  have. Caiques are a perfect mix of dependency and independence. While they do love to play with you, they are content with toys if left alone. But playing with caiques is so much fun that you won't mind spending hours with them everyday, flipping them upside down and watching them play.

Cuddling: Cuddly! Most caiques love to get a head scratch from their favorite person. They do not tend to be shy. They are very social, energetic birds! They like being handled, too

Cost: high: ranging from 500$ to 1,000$. Caiques require a medium-sized cage stocked with plenty of toys that I can guarantee will be ripped to pieces and need to be replaced often. A cage can cost between 60$ - 150$  dollars alone, and toys often cost 8-30$ each for these larger birds. The toys are VERY necessary for parrots. Seeds are NEVER recommended to be regularly fed to birds with clipped wings; a good pellet diet for a medium parrot costs around fifteen dollars for six-eight weeks, and should be supplemented by parrot-safe fruits and veggies. 

Personalities: clowny, entertaining, social, excitable, joyful, cuddly, learn tricks easily, inquisitive, acrobatic Problems: very few other than the problems normally associated with parrots, including a need for attention. Has a tendency to get itself into trouble because of its playful nature

Is it right for you?: These birds make great family pets for families enjoy interacting and giving attention to birds. They are fine around children and actually prefer it since they love being the center of attention. If a family is willing to put in the time and care this bird needs, caiques make excellent pets for anyone. 

Remember, no matter how small the parrot is, they are intelligent, high-demand animals, and you are making a commitment to provide attention, toys, and food when purchasing a parrot. If you can’t afford what it takes to keep these birds happy, you can’t afford the parrot.

Bird Profile: Amazon Parrots

If you are looking into getting a parrot, you should do your research before making a purchase, as all parrots have different personalities, levels of independence, demands, and abilities. 

Amazon

size: Large. This is a bird that can definitely stand its ground;quite a powerful bite. This can be very problematic and intimidating during sexual maturation. (more on that later.)

noise: Loud! These sociable birds are rarely quiet. Not for apartments or townhomes.

talking ability: Excellent. Amazons are among the best talkers in the parrot world along with budgies, African Greys, and Indian Ringnecks.

lifespan: ranging from 25 to 60 years average, depending on the bird’s health and living conditions.

Independence: a good rule of thumb to remember is that the smaller the bird, the more independence they will  have. All Amazons are playful, independent little birds that can easily entertain themselves for a few hours a day when provided with a variety of toys and things they can climb. However, they still demand at least five hours of interaction per day. I like to say that Amazons are okay while you are gone, but love when you are there.

Cuddling: Not very cuddly! This is not a species that will want to simply rest in your arms. They will gladly be held, but prefer to play with you; much loved activities include hanging upside down from your hand and climbing all over you. These birds are full of energy and would rather jump and play than sit pretty. In addition, they have a stiff feather structure. They would not enjoy head rubs like the soft-feathered cockatoos might.

Cost: high: ranging from 700$ to 2,100$. Amazons require a large cage stocked with plenty of toys and safe climbing equipment . A cage can cost around 100-200$ dollars alone, and toys often cost 10-20$ each for these larger birds. The toys are VERY necessary for parrots. Seeds are NEVER recommended to be regularly fed to birds with clipped wings; a good pellet diet for medium-sized parrot costs around twenty dollars for six-eight weeks, and should be supplemented by parrot-safe fruits and veggies. 

Personalities: acrobatic, clown, playful, full of spunk, energetic, excitable, life of the party, very lovable, and a constant source of entertainment. Problems: is not a cuddler, often becomes violent during mating season after reaching sexual maturity (between 2-4 years old), known to be moody and often unpredictable.

Is it right for you?: If you are looking for a cuddly pet who will gladly be obedient to you without question or comment, Amazons are not the bird for you. Remember, these are parrots, and they require much more attention than dogs and cats. If you want a cuddle buddy, get a dog. Due to their powerful bite and moody nature, Amazons are NOT good pets for families. However, they make wonderful best friends for life for the right owner, if one is willing to socialize and love this parrot unconditionally.

Remember, no matter how small the parrot is, they are intelligent, high-demand animals, and you are making a commitment to provide attention, toys, and food when purchasing a parrot. If you can’t afford what it takes to keep these birds happy, you can’t afford the parrot.

Bird Profile: Conures!

Conures (excluding Green-Cheeked. Click here for a green-cheeked conure profile)

size: small. Tend to be nippy when not properly socialized like most medium-sized parrots.

noise: LOUD. Conures are best known for their loud, high-pitched screeching when excited, and they are NOT afraid to yell all day! Not suitable for apartment living.

talking ability: somewhat good. 

lifespan: ranging from 10 to 25 years average, depending on the bird's health and living conditions

Independence: a good rule of thumb to remember is that the smaller the bird, the more independence they will  have. Conures need more interaction and attention from you everyday than a cockatiel or budgie. Without this commitment, it is difficult to keep a conure socialized. However, they are extremely playful, and are so entertaining that it is not a burden!
