When Remus walked into Black and White on Monday morning, he was surprised to see people wandering around the gallery. The artist had only ever visited in the evening, when Sirius was alone. Now, in the light of day, with rays of sunshine pouring through the impressive windows, the gallery looked vibrant, striking, alive.
Sirius was standing next to a painting, one that Remus had come to recognize as Lily's work, talking with two individuals whom Remus had yet to meet.
One was tall and slender, with muscular arms and calves, hidden beneath perfectly umber skin that glowed in the gallery lighting. The person had a shaved head, which emphasized sharp cheekbones, a broad nose, and elegantly plump lips parted in a joyful smile.
The other person was shorter than the first, with broad shoulders covered by a worn-out leather jacket. A rosy blush spread across creamy skin as they laughed along with something that Sirius said. Their hair was cropped short in the back and sides and swept away from their eyes in the front, a typical hipster undercut.
"Ah! Speak of the devil!" Sirius sang, waving in Remus' direction. The artist glanced behind himself to make sure that it was he whom Sirius was signaling to; this was a definite departure from Sirius' typical treatment of Remus.
"Uh… hello?"
"Mr. Lupin! Come here! I'd like you to meet some clients of ours!"
Remus tensed up, his jaw locking, as he awkwardly shuffled towards Sirius and his two companions. He hadn't expected to have to meet anybody that day, let alone schmooze about his art.
"Uh… hello," Remus muttered as he approached the group.
Sirius' smile was wide and gleaming, but it was different from the smile he had at the restaurant. If Remus hadn't known better, he would have thought nothing of it, but he knew what Sirius Black looked like when he was genuinely happy; this was not it. Sirius' grin was too broad, his mouth too open. The smile didn't reach all the way to his eyes, leaving Remus feeling almost sorry for Sirius. He looked happy enough, but none of it was real.
"Mr. Lupin," Sirius began, putting his hand on the small of the taller person's back. "This is Dorcas Meadowes and their partner Marlene McKinnon." He turned to smile at his friends. "Dor, Marls, this is our newest artist, Remus Lupin."
"Pleasure to meet you," Dorcas said, sticking their hand out to shake Remus'. They had the same posh accent as Sirius, the same coy grin spreading across their face. Remus returned the smile as best he could, nodding politely at the couple.
"Nice to meet you," he said shyly, shaking Dorcas' hand. "I'm Remus… obviously…" He glanced down sheepishly at his shoes.
"We've heard a lot about you," Dorcas continued, their expression remaining calm and polite; they were obviously used to dealing with awkward artist-types. "Here's hoping your work will live up to our expectations!" Dorcas let out a sharp laugh that rang through the air, but they stopped when they noticed the look on Remus' face. "Oh, my dear, I was just kidding! There's no need to be nervous around us, right Marls?"
Marlene, who was standing slightly behind their partner, offered Remus a feeble grin. Remus couldn't help but feel like he would have more in common with this person than anyone else he had met at Black and White so far.
"Dorcas and Marlene are art consultants," Sirius said, ignoring the uncomfortable silence that momentarily settled around their group. "And they always come to us before other galleries, so our artists have an excellent opportunity to have their work sold."
"Art consultant?" Remus cocked his head in confusion.
"It means rich people hire us when they're too lazy to decorate their own houses," Marlene said, drawing out a laugh from their partner. Remus couldn't help but grin; the couple had an exceptional dynamic that worked well for them.
Like you and Sirius.
Remus immediately shook the thought from his mind, directing his attention back to the couple in front of him.
"Well," Remus said with a smirk, "here's hoping rich people like my stuff."
Dorcas and Marlene both laughed, but Sirius' face remained still, his overly-polite smiling betraying the smallest hint of displeasure.
"Dorcas, Marlene," Sirius said, cutting through the levity with the sharpness of his voice. "It was wonderful to see you again. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to steal Remus away. We have a few things to go over before we finalize his paperwork."
The group said their goodbyes and Remus found himself led into Sirius' office at the back of the gallery.
"Sit."
Sirius' smile was gone and replaced with his better-than-thou chin tilt and a scowl.
Remus obeyed his command, sinking into the chair that he first sat in during his portfolio interview, equally as anxious from the look on Sirius Black’s face.
“Mr. Lupin,” Sirius began, his expression stoic and unreadable. Remus swallowed past the lump in his throat. “The paperwork is all drawn up…” Sirius turned to the table next to him where he grabbed a small stack of papers. Remus waited for Sirius to continue what he was saying, but the rest of his sentence never came.
“I feel like there was a but in there…”
Remus watched as Sirius’ jaw clenched, his eyes scanning across Remus’ face, reading him.
“Yes, well…” Sirius’ eyes darted towards the office door, then back to Remus. “Before I take you on as an artist, I need to know that you are not just in this for the money.”
“I… What?” Remus squeezed his eyes together, bringing his hand to the bridge of his nose. When did he ever give that impression? “Of course I’m not in this for the money. I mean, it wouldn’t be horrible if I did end up making ends meet, but…” Remus chewed the edge of his lip nervously as he watched Sirius’ face. “What made you ask that?”
“It’s a standard question, Mr. Lupin,” Sirius said, almost defensively. “All of my artists are chosen because they put their art first, before anything. Some artists show here and never sell a single item, and they continue showing here because they want to. Because this is the gallery for them.” Sirius paused for a moment, looking Remus dead in the eyes. “Is this the gallery for you?”
“Yes.”
Remus’ answer was immediate. He hadn’t even had time to process the question before he spoke; his response was almost instinctive. Something inside of him squirmed when Sirius betrayed a hint of a grin at the corner of his mouth, the vaguest essence of a smile in his eyes.
“Well then, Mr. Lupin…” Sirius handed Remus the stack of paperwork and a fountain pen. “Welcome to Black and White.”

There was blue. A lot of blue. It took you a second to realize that the blue colour was coming from the sky. But it was adored with golden marble-like threads. The sun dancing across the ripples of the water above. Letting your eyes flicker to the sides, you saw your arms that were moving like see-weeds in slow, thought-out movements, almost giving them this flowing look. You saw your hair in your peripheral, indicating your movement downwards. With slight thud in your head, your movement stopped overall. Your eyes still looking up at the sky that was above the pool. Couple of bubbles from your mouth and nose distorting your view for a second. Momentarily your vision was interrupted with something dark. Something that mixed well with water and made it look murky. The dark liquid in slow mix of water gained yellowish, smoke like outlines until it all turned into rusty colour altogether when you waved your hand through it. That brain of yours seemed to work in slow motion, so it took you a while to acknowledge the fact it was blood and that it was coming somewhere from your head. You were bleeding. Next second the panic settled in and your lungs started to burn as they were screaming for air. Your hands started to claw at nothing, trying to reach something that didn’t exist. The burn in your chest became so unbearable that out of sheer instinct of keeping yourself alive, you gulped down the water, pulling it straight to your lungs, making them burn even more as black started to cloud your vision.

Professor
Pairing : Loki, Reader
PART X
Last chapter : Loki received an ambiguous text from a mysterious woman.
Summary : Y/N, a student, and Loki, a professor, attend the same wedding. They don’t realize they could meet again.
WARNING : Angst
Y/L/N : Your Last Name
No, she tried to convince herself, it could be his mother or a relative.
Loki never mentioned any... wife.
Heart hammering in her chest, fists clenched, Y/N’s body was entirely shaking. The whole world seemed to shatter under her feet.
Suddenly certain that someone was watching her, she looked up.
Loki's eyes were scanning her expression, aware that something was wrong. Even when she was mad at him, the young girl couldn't help but admire his pale skin contrasting strikingly with his dark hair. In the end, he remained so mysterious, so secretive. How could she even hope being a part of his world ?
''What's the matter ?'' he asked, coming closer as she put great efforts into pushing away the odd discovery.
Doing her best to hide her fears from him, Y/N rushed into Loki's arms and gripped his shoulders in an unusual way,
''I'm perfectly fine.''
Their gazes locked and he knew for sure she was lying. Loki's eyebrows shot up,
''Well, you seem lost.''
A forceful smile on her lips, Y/N hung upon his neck and kept staring at him,
''It's nothing. I'm just tired.'' she quickly replied.
With that, she wrapped herself into a towel and lazily dragged her feet to Loki's bedroom. There, Y/N swept the place with her eyes for a sign of her. The mysterious Emily.
But there was none. Not a picture, not a trace.
Y/N felt that feeling again, only much more strongly. The anxiety, burning her stomach and twisting her guts.
She looked around, breathing heavily. After a moment, her eyes laid on Loki. Leaning against the wall, he had his green emeralds fixed on her. As if he could read her thoughts, his gaze darkened and she saw clear pain in it,
''What is it ?'' he asked, keeping the tone of his voice as calm as possible.
Y/N apprehensively shrugged, grabbing a small, round object on his desk,
''Nothing.'' she gulped and waited a few seconds before adding, ''I was wondering if you had... family.''
Loki froze, glaring at her as she pretended to focus on the accessory she was holding in her hands.
''I don't have any family.'' he coldly answered.
Y/N’s fingers clenched around the object,
''I mean a mother, a sister maybe...''
With each passing moment, the tension between them became more intense. Rolling his eyes, Loki let out a deep sigh in exasperation and kept himself busy,
''I told you I don't have any sister. My mother died a long time ago,'' he sounded angry now, ''if there's something you need to ask me I suggest you do it right now.''
Y/N remained silent as he shuffled around, avoiding her gaze. She'd put the artefact back on the desk, her throat feeling tighter.
''I thought it was finally going to be alright, between us.'' Loki's voice suddenly echoed in the room, wounded and loud.
A deafening silence followed, leaving Y/N on the edge of crying,
''A wife, maybe ?'' she insisted, but heard him release an exasperated sigh,
''Oh dear, what are you talking about ?'' Loki nervously brushed his fingers through his hair and she knew he was annoyed by her questions. Shuffling around and gathering his clothes, he was barely listening now.
''Emily ?'' she tried.
And he stopped what he was doing. Licking his lower lip, Loki sat down on the bed.
Y/N couldn't stand looking at him any longer. As she averted her eyes to the floor, realization took hold. A tightness in the center of her chest made it harder to breathe. The lump that was in her throat slowly rising, the young girl felt a tear rolling down her cheek.
''Y/N...'' Loki suddenly seemed to come back to reality, ''I know I should have told you.'' his senses, ''It would be hard to explain.''
She didn't let him finish.
No more secrets. No more lies.
Y/N quickly dressed under Loki's frightened eyes,
''Where are you going ?'' he panicked, abruptly standing up.
At first, she didn't answer. The truth was out. Cold and terrible. A wife. That was something she'd never thought about. After all, Loki was in his early thirties, he was gorgeous. Why would he be with a student ?
In her most natural voice, swallowing her tears back, the young girl simply declared,
''I'm leaving.'' she stepped closer to him, ''Having sex is one thing, trusting someone is another one. I guess we just have the sex.''
She'd talked without any emotion, looking straight into his eyes. If Loki wasn't going to commit in this relationship, she had no reason to insist.
Not knowing exactly how to react and wether or not she was serious, his eyes widened in fear,
''Y/N, this isn't what you think.'' his voice sounded worried.
For a moment, she wanted to wrap her arms around him and forget everything. But how could she ?
''Well, how do you explain that weird text from Emily ?''
His expression a mixture of surprise and terror, Loki didn't say a word. His silence became unbearable and Y/N bit down onto her lower lip, forcing herself not to cry,
''Great,'' she muttered, taking quick steps towards the door, ''she texted you and added love at the end of her message.''
Y/N looked behind her one last time. Loki hadn't moved. She stared at his back, waiting for him to at least turn around, but he didn't. Tears flooding her cheeks, the young girl slowly made her way downstairs.
The sudden sound of footsteps approaching at a quick pace then came to her ear.
''Y/N !'' Loki called. In a flash, he grabbed her arm from behind, ''Wait. Do not leave again. Not like that.''
Turning around to face him, the young girl sobbed, ''You're lying...'' but he cut her off, ''I'm not lying to you ! I swear.'' he tried to pull her closer, his own voice getting raspy, ''I swear I'm not, Y/N.''
Surrendering to her resistance, he managed to place her hand on his chest and she felt his heart pounding there. In less than a moment, his body was against hers. His breath crashed against her temple and she melted to his touch, to the irresistible chemistry between them.
''I'm not lying.'' he whispered, short of breath.
With his hands, he tried to lift her chin up so she'd look up at him.
''Don't...'' Y/N sniffled, tired of this relationship, if you could call that a 'relationship', that was going nowhere. ''You keep hiding things as if I was your enemy and I'm here, waiting for a fucking sign." she wiped her cheeks and moved back, ''I'm ridiculous.''
''A sign.'' he repeated, his fingers still trying to make any kind of connection with her body.
''Yes, Loki, a sign.'' Y/N spat, ''Just so I know that I'm more than a student you fuck.'' she closed her eyes for a few seconds, ''God, I can't do this anymore.'' Tears ran down her cheeks again, ''Who is she, Loki ?'' her shaky voice asked one last time.
Loki shifted nervously and pressed his lips together, clearly distraught. He crossed his arms on his chest and his mouth opened silently. At first, nothing came. Not a sound nor a breath, until he finally sighed,
''It's complicated.''
Y/N’s teeth clenched,
''I want to know.''
The Loki who was always so calm and self-confident disappeared. Relentlessly running his fingers through his hair, he took a deep breath. With each second, he grew more anxious. The change in his demeanor wasn't reassuring at all.
''Y/N, I... I'm begging you to stay, I just need time.'' he cleared his throat, but his voice remained husky, ''Just... please, don't leave.'' he tried to touch her hand, but the young girl shook her head.
''Goodbye, Loki.'' she whispered before running away.
Outside, the temperature was still warm.
The Earth hadn't stopped spinning, and yet it felt like her whole world had been torn apart. As long as she could, the young girl ran along the road. When she started to feel dizzy, Y/N stopped to catch her breath.
Still crying, the tears continued to fall onto her face, running in every direction, mixing together and relentlessly falling. Without thinking, she grabbed her phone and sent a quick text to Jane.
Can we meet somewhere ? Not feeling good.
Almost instantly, her device vibrated with the answer on its screen,
Meet me at the Anti-Cafe in 5 minutes.
