Edie - Unit 1 Part B - Arts Challenge Review

Did you achieve your arts challenge?

I think that I did achieve my arts challenge. I was able to not only learn more about cameras and their functions but I think I have also been able to improve shots that I take.

Did you have to change your action plan or your challenge in anyway? if so what changed and why?

I don't think that I did have to change much anything about my action plan or my arts challenge however one thing that did affect how well I progressed was time. because we had only a certain amount of time each day it meant that not everyone would get the same amount of time trying out different roles meaning that the timetable would have to be rearranged sometimes.

What went well? Why?

I think that trying out different shot types went very well for me because I found it easier to learn about cameras and how to take good shots through experience as I feel it can be more engaging and interesting. therefore I think this allowed me to learn quickly how to take better shots that are more technically complicated easier.

What was more challenging? why?

I think that trying to remember what each button did and how they worked was more challenging to me as I found it more complicated and more confusing. However I think that I understood it more as I was able to use the cameras more.

What's have you learned from doing your arts challenge?

I have learned a lot more about cameras and different shot types. I have also learned how to take different shot types which I think I can use in the future either in a job or just when I take photos of my own. I think I have also gained experience about how film set work and the different jobs that go into making films and how they have to work together to create a film.

How have your art form skills developed?

I think that not only has my knowledge of cameras and shot types developed but also my experience of taking them. I think that I am a lot better now at operating cameras than I was before taking this course.

What would you do differently another time?

I don't think that I would do much differently however I might try to take more notes on the different functions of the features on the cameras and maybe try to get some more experience in taking different shots.

What do you think about the feedback you received from others:

Chloe - (tutor) ‘You have significantly developed your skills and knowledge of using professional cameras, and have improved your understanding of filmmaking techniques and shot types.  Jack and I have been really impressed with how quickly you picked up the manual settings and operation of the sony camera, particularly within such a high pressured and time restricted environment on set. You successfully practised and delivered some complex shots using techniques like rack focus and handheld tracking. We felt you had a really natural ability for camerawork. You should keep on improving on these skills. Well done"

I really enjoyed learning about cameras and how to work them during this course as it helped to give more experience with cameras and what it was like to work on a set. this feedback helped me to see what I did well during the course and what I can improve for the future to improve my camerawork skills.

Who are the participants or main audience or your project?

The participants and main audience of my project are young people. This means we will tailor the project to interest young people more.

How will you recruit participants?

Participants are already on the project.

How will you promote your project?

I will promote this project on social media and also on pamphlets and posters.

How will you deliver your project?

My project will be delivered as a short ten minute film.

What practical things will you need to organise and how will you do this?

I will need things such as materials, pens, pencils, paper and online sites such as drawing apps like canva to create designs for props.

What support are you going to need from other people?

I will need other people to help me design and organise props and designs which will help save time.

How are you going to assess how your leadership skills are developing?

I will take photos and videos to record how my leadership skills are developing throughout the project. I will also reflect on these videos and photos to see how I've developed.

My arts challenge is cinematography where I will be learning about different cameras and learning how to use them in a way that helps to take the best shots and film.

Reflection 1

Date : 17.07.21

Notes:

We learned about different parts of a camera and how they affected the shots that you took. For example, we learned that the focus ring helped to put the shot in focus but it could also change it if you wanted to use it in a shot like a focus pull.

We also learned that overexposure can be bad as it takes out parts of the shot meaning that you would be able to see less than if it was before. This is shown on the screen through black and white lines (zebras)

I think that this went well because I learned a lot about cameras and the different functions of them.

However I found it hard to remember the names of each button and their functions.

I think my skills have improved because I now know more about different shot types and the camera that we will be using to create our film which will help me more when I go to actually do filming. 

- These are photos of the group of us learning how to operate camera equipment such as lights, the camera, sound, directing, and acting. you can see that in these photos that I am Director of Photography and operating the camera filming the subject, Gabriel. in this shot i did a pan down where i moved the camera downwards from the ceiling onto the subject. This helped me not only learn about operating cameras but also let me experience taking some shots.

Reflection 2

Date: 27.07.21

Notes:  today I used a filming camera to film part of the footage for the film project. In this I used different types of shots like an over the shoulder shot which was handheld following the main actor as they ran down the carriage and a focus pull where I changed the area of focus from an object in the foreground to the background. I think I faced challenges in making sure that each shot was steady and that it was smooth and wasn't blurry. 

I now have more experience filming different shots and I was able to try out a variety of new shots that I have never tried before which has improved my skills of cinematography. 

- This is a photo of me operating a static shot, which is a close up shot of the main character in our film. I found this shot easy to do as I did not need to do much when filming this shot as it doesn't move. 

- This is a photo of me doing a focus pull which is where i change the point of focus from an object in the foreground to the background. this was one one of the first complex shots that i did and gave me some experience with working with different shots.

Reflection 3

Date: August 30th 2021

Notes: today I was able to use the camera to do different types of shots like using tracks to create a smooth action when moving the camera compared to creating a shot that is handheld which could be shaky and hard to see. i also used the focus ring to change the point of focus in the foreground and background. 

I found it difficult to remember to stop the tripod when moving it across the tracks meaning that i accidentally would move the camera along the tracks too much, causing it to fall off of them which would affect the shot. being able to do this helped me understand more about different shots and how to not create as many mistakes when filming. 

I think that this has really helped me to understand that I need to be very careful when filming and that I need to not only be be aware of what I am filming but also my surroundings.

Edenai: Bronze Award Part B - Film Review

What did I experience as an audience member?

As an audience member, I watched the film ‘Avengers: Endgame’. I experienced the excitement of all the avengers teaming up all over again after “infinity war”. Infinity war is a movie about an evil alien named ‘Thanos’ who is looking for the infinity stones so that he gets the power to wipe out 50% of all living creatures in the universe and the Avengers (a group of superheroes) are trying to stop him.

What did I like best and why?

My two favourite scenes were the final battle and the part where they have to time travel to get all the infinity stones back. The reason why I loved the final battle was because it was cool seeing this avenger’s team that was not actually the avengers, but all the marvel characters together.

What do I think could have been done better? I think they should have thought of which of the avengers they were going to take out a bit more because some characters would be better for the part of the movie when they have the left-over avengers from “infinity war” and try to make something big out of it. Although, I did think that Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and some of the “Guardians” of the galaxy, were a good team even though they did not really know each other that well. There were some actors that I did not want to be blipped because I thought they could have done a better story if they switched the actors that were blipped.

What artforms were involved? The way they showed Hulk as not so aggressive anymore was very creative and gave a great amount of impact on how the audience viewed him. Also, a lot in the script and the camera movement was very intense and unexpected in a way. The fact that Hulk could not create the time machine, but Stark could, it showed the difference in intellect of the two completely different characters. One of my favourites scenes was when Thanos was attacking (around the end of the movie) and sent all of his weird four-legged creatures in to attack the Avengers and it was dark and even though that scene happens a lot in other movies, it really stood out from all of them because you did not know what was going to happen next or if Thanos would come in the tunnel with the creatures or later into the movie. The camera movement when the Thanos ships arrived, how they got the whole ship in the camera was good and the detail in Thano’s minions is very good and makes it look real even though I think they are puppets who control it electrically. Another art form is when Wanda is trying to destroy the soul stone so that Thanos does not get it, Thanos uses the time stone to get the soul stone back and the effect on him and his veins is always cool and never gets old.

Would I recommend it to others and why? I would recommend it to others because it has very good reviews and in my opinion, (and millions more) I think it is a nice way of showing that all the cool separate movies like ant-man, captain America, black panther etc., are all in the same universe of movies.

Aya: Bronze Award Part B - Film Review

What are you reviewing: 

I will be reviewing the latest movie that came out a few weeks ago called Fast and Furious directed by Justin Lin. I watched the film at home because we were in lockdown.

What did you like best and why?

To be honest I liked basically everything about the movie and all the action bits were my favourite part because they made me really excited to find out what would happen next. My favourite bit was where the main character was in a tower, and he pulled some bars down and the building collapsed. I got scared because I thought he had died but he hadn't. I liked how the actors stayed in character, and there was a lot of tension. 

What art-forms are involved: 

There was obviously lots of acting and good makeup effects to make everything look real. Lastly there were lots of cameras that were used because they needed to capture every angle of the actress where they were acting.

What do you think they could've done better: 

1: The ending could have been much better because all the characters just sat down and were celebrating that they had survived and it was boring. 

2: The movie could have been a bit longer

3: They could have made the beginning more clear, because the main character had a brother and I didn’t understand that the brother was against him.

Would you recommend it to others:

Yea definitely. And only because I know my friends love action movies and all the tension there is so this would be the perfect movie for them and I know they would love it just as much I did.

What have other people said about it: 

I've heard that this movie is a very interesting one and it's great for people who love action movies. However, on IMDB which is a movie database, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5433138/  it has been rated 5.5/10 which means it isn’t so popular!

Gabriel: Silver Award Unit 1 Part B - Deliver your arts Challenge (Reflection 1)

Developing skills in cinematography. I will use professional cameras to do so with professional advisors and a team of other young people around me.

REFLECTION 1

Date:  03/07/17

NOTES: This reflection is on last week’s session. I noticed a difference in terms of my skills, as the different camera angles no longer seemed alien to me. Even Dutch Tilt, which I had previously had difficulty understanding, now seemed almost second nature to me, and certainly were a part of my memory, which I used to my advantage when filming the other group members when we took turns doing the different roles. What is going particularly well is how I could combine all of the different camera techniques I knew. By this, I meant that I could use whichever techniques were appropriate in the moment, rather than having to take time thinking of them, and thus could take decisive action to make sure the scene we were shooting was a success. This said, I found using the camera itself quite challenging, as sometimes a shot may look beautiful in my head, but in reality it doesn’t look as professional as I thought did.

->  This was recommended by Rio, who guided us, as it is a movie which deals with time travel and uses a simple plot structure and cinematography.
