CHAPTER 21 PARTNERSHIPS - 00037473 Tutorials for Question of General Questions and General General Questions
Weekend Top Ten #211
Top Ten Duos or Partners in Fiction
So ages ago now I read this list of duos in fiction, and I decided there and then to write my own - because, quite frankly, any list of partnerships that doesn’t include Batman and Robin is just freakin’ crazy. Anyway, it’s taken me a long time because I had Other Stuff To Do, but here it is.
Typical caveat time: I’ve tried to focus on partnerships where there is some degree of equality; of friends, rather than - say - lovers or, if possible parents/pseudo-parents. That’s not to say there aren’t parental units here - two, depending on your opinion of Batman and Robin - but I’ve been quite strict on romantic couplings. Hence no Alana and Marko from Saga, no Han and Leia, no Mulder and Scully, and - because I’m including inferred romance as well as actual - no Cyclonus and Tailgate from MTMTE or no Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. Also I’ve tried to focus on people who work together as a pair, rather than “just” friends - obviously it’s a fine line; the Gilmore girls don’t really get to go on adventures or try to save the world, but all the same they feel like a “proper” double-act, significantly lessened when they work alone. And, speaking of double acts, I decided to reluctantly exclude Laurel and Hardy as they’re sort of themselves, really, aren’t they? They’re not quite as much of a fictional construct - despite obviously playing characters - as Frodo and Sam.
Anyway, here we go.
Batman & Robin (Batman comics, 1940-current)
Frodo Baggins & Samwise Gamgee (The Lord of the Rings, 1954-55)
Garfield & Odie (Garfield, 1978-current)
Jules Whitfield & Vincent Vega (Pulp Fiction, 1994)
Danger Mouse & Penfold (Danger Mouse, 1981-current)
Dick Grayson & Donna Troy (Teen Titans and related comics, 1964-current)
Bumblebee & Spike (The Transformers cartoon, 1984-1987)
Dave Lister & Arnold Rimmer (Red Dwarf, 1988-current)
Calvin & Hobbes (Calvin and Hobbes, 1985-1995)
Rori & Lorelai Gilmore (The Gilmore Girls, 2000-current)
