while i'm on a north/south thoughts kick: can anyone name me a comedy double act where one of them is northern and the other is southern? i can think of lots of double acts but i'd mentally classify all of them as "both from the same side of the divide". curious if it's a shared-comedic-sensibilities thing...
honestly, the plot of ”Hot Desk” (John Finnemore’s Double Acts S1E6) is such a great au fic prompt:
A receptionist and a night guard at the same company share a desk. They meet twice a day, seven in the morning and seven in the evening, when one of them end their shift and the other one start theirs (suspend your disbelief that a receptionist’s shift is 12 hours, I guess? It’s never touch upon in the show lol).
I mean come on, it’s a perfect setup for a meet-cute
I have 2 spare tickets to the John Finnemore gig on 17th January in Oxford if anyone wants them... dm me...
would anybody be interested in reading a crack comedy duo crossover fanfic where it’s set in 1940s post-war america in a lonely farm in the catskills. basc bob hope gets thrown into prison (for a crime he did not do), meets bing crosby who’s his cell mate and veteran of that prison for like ten years, and they eventually break out together after bob almost transfers prisons. they run away, and stumble upon a couple on a farm in the catskills.
meanwhile dean and jerry are a young couple trying to make it in vaudeville (an outdated thing) who were working for a bit in new jersey, decided well fuck it we’re not really getting anywhere, and begin to head to new york when they see that a couple on farm needed a couple of hands. the couple on this lonely farm is… george burns and gracie allen! yeah lol.
laurel and hardy also wind up on this damn farm bc ollie is like. third cousins with gracie or something. all three duos end up on this farm working, and uhhh ig shenanigans happen
if anyone else has a horribly horribly contrived way of making their fav comedy duo end up on this damn farm, send the idea my way. it’d be so funny to write any comedy duo in—it doesn’t have to be a 40s or 50s comedy duo either. it can be any decade lol
For everyone excited about Good Omens S2 and particularly Muriel:
If you haven't yet LISTEN TO CABIN PRESSURE! As of right now Muriel is striking me as somewhat of a female version of the Cabin Pressure character Arthur Shappey, who is a) one of the great fictional characters of all time and b) not only played by but also of course written by the phenomenal John Finnemore, who ALSO co-wrote Muriel! And indeed, that scene from NYCC is incredibly Shappean, or should I say Finnemorean. Cabin Pressure incidentally also has some incredible plotting (including mystery plots like the Birling Day episodes), hilarious jokes, brilliant character development and possibly the number one ending of all time. Also perfect found family vibes!
Basically, once again I am SO glad that JF was brought onboard for the comedy side of Good Omens 2 and the “kind of quiet and gentle and romantic” vibe that Gaiman mentions in this is so up his street it's not funny. (Also the specific JF anecdote Gaiman brought up in the NYCC panel was quite frankly very reassuring to me.) I am incredibly excited for this!
(Also listen to the rest of JF's stuff- his Double Acts has 1.75 half-hour rom coms, Hot Desk and Penguin Diplomacy, which may stop just short of the CLEARLY inevitable ending but otherwise has impeccable vibes, some of which are actually very Good Omens-esque. And Souvenir Programme is genius, with S9 a totally different kind of genius that I personally found incredibly impactful, as fellow listeners can tell from the fact that I subsequently named my Tumblr and AO3 accounts after quotes from it.)
Question: does anyone by any chance have John Finnemore's double acts somewhere 👀
In Rotterdam, Douglas says to Carolyn “Maybe you could try it [the MJN Air welcome to the pre-flight film] a little less like Queen Victoria recording an answer phone greeting?” and then in Double Acts, he cast Stephanie Cole as Queen Victoria recording an answer phone greeting. Beautiful.
