I’m thinking how strange it is that different generations prioritise different things.

How the Ancient Greeks themselves, especially Achilles’ resembled figure, would want the glory of war to outlast them, be enshrined in history. And it has been.

And how for our generation, love surely should have been the thing to outlast the Trojan war? If not Achilles and Patroclus, then Hector and Andromache. Love, love, love… surely that’s worth dying over? That should outlast us all. It’s the most fundamental thing, aside from self-interest.

And also how utterly brilliant Homer is to craft a story that on the surface, immortalises war-glory, but layers beneath, celebrates people and their connections to one another. Priam, creeping into the heart of the enemy Greek camp for his son, his son. Achilles, hunger-struck and desperate in love-turned-grief, clinging to Patroclus’s corpse and muttering to his ghost. Andromache and Hector laughing at the startled baby between them. Helen, defiant and resentful, insulting a goddess to her face. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything like it, nor ever will I.
