Why not believe? If in faith you risk nothing, but through faithlessness, risk everything? - Gemina by @misterkristoff and @amiekaufmanauthor ~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~ Happy National Book Lovers Day! Featured today is my favorite book, in one of my favorite trilogies ever, that I takk about (maybe) too much. I just finished listening my way through (again!), but I've been listening or reading this trilogy every six months since my first read in 2019. I may be obsessed, but this trilogy and these characters always bring me joy and a mess of other emotions. That's the point of any book in my opinion. ☆Read what makes you happy!☆ ~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~ #readersofinstagram #bookstagram #bookswelove #bookaholic #booklover #booklife #bookaddict #illuminaefiles #gemina #jaykristoff #amiekaufman #favoritereads #nationalbookloversday #pascalswager https://www.instagram.com/p/ChCYKnWgePK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
'We know the truth, not only by the reason, but also by the heart.'
French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal was born on this day in 1623. Educated by his father, Pascal showed an impressive grasp of mathematics from a young age, and went on to become a pioneer in the fields of game theory and probability. At the age of eighteen, in an effort to support his father with extensive tax calculations, he also invented and constructed one of the first mechanical calculators.
After an intense religious experience, Pascal's commitment to Catholicism was renewed and he shifted his focus to religious, spiritual and philosophical writings. His most influential works are 'Lettres provinciales' and 'Pensées', the latter containing perhaps one of his most well-known ideas, Pascal's Wager, which argues for a belief in God.
This small porcelain sculpture of Blaise Pascal was made in Sèvres Porcelain Factory c. 1784.
“If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him.” Voltaire
Does asking whether God exists help teens think about bigger questions such as what gives life meaning? What makes something right or wrong? Who or what do I look to when I’m trying to understand my purpose, my identity, my relationships, or the challenges? Host Hanna talks about the fact that even teens who don’t believe in a higher power often care deeply about justice, fairness, compassion, dignity, and the desire to be part of something meaningful. Many of those values were born of religious traditions long before they were written into constitutions or taught in classrooms. Hanna interviews third-year Ph.D. student in the Department of Philosophy, Joe Schmid, who provides an argument for and against God's existence. The cosmological argument for God's existence posits that everything in the universe has a cause. Arguments against God's existence center on the Problem of Evil, how an all-good, all-powerful God allows suffering. He then discusses Pascal’s Wager. Blaise Pascal, the 17th-century philosopher and mathematician, argued that we should believe in God and act as if God exists because it is the best bet.
The existence-of-God question is more than a question of belief. It’s a doorway into understanding culture, history, psychology, community, creativity, and the human need for meaning.
Dive deeper into the existence of God and decide for yourself!
