Another good Bassai/Passai Dai comparison across styles. Again, I can see the Shotokan version in the Shuri-ryu interpretation.
Check out the latest Kata Self defense Bunkai Application from Bassai Dai. #selfdefense #karate #seminar #murrieta #KobushiMartialArts #AKJJ #aikikenpojujutsu #lopresti #passai #bassaidai #loprestimma (at Kobushi Martial Arts)
I’ve learned this version of Passai with a few slight variations in a couple of the hand movements. It’s not a part of our style or curriculum, but one my instructors learned it in Okinawa and brought it back to see what we can learn from it and to give us a little more variety.
Chosin Chibana karate performance, Matsumura no Passai.
The Passai I learned has different techniques, but in breaking down the basic pattern and flow, you can see it’s the effectively the same kata. I enjoy finding earlier video of kata, especially of the earlier masters, to get as close to the original kata as possible. It’s almost like stargazing and seeing what the universe looked like millennia ago.
