Unexpected basketball with some high school kids reminds me of when I was in high school playing against the old timers. I couldn't understand why I couldn't beat them. They were older and slower and I was youthful, enthusiastic, and extremely eager to win. As I grew older, I watched them play and I saw how calculated every action was. They made extra passes. They moved the ball well. They played more team basketball and less hero/isolation. Less dribbling. More defending. More talking, more calling out screens, more rebounding, more help defense, more rotating. 20 years later and I'm the old, out of shape, court veteran and these kids are looking at me like "this is an easy win." My same mentality all those years ago, coming back to haunt me. And just like how those cats gave me a free education, I returned the favor and educated these young guns. I hear the whispers and the cheers on the side, mesmerized by the passing and the ball movement. It's a different style that they're not used to seeing. Then the raised eyebrows and the turn away's when the defense gets physical - another style they're not used to seeing. 3 games later and we stay undefeated, it's an education. Meanwhile, my little man is content with sitting on the side and cheering. Good times.
