—something that has bothering me for all of one day (but that’s long enough) is the now lost (to me) first name of someone with the surname Passmore. They were a biologist who took pictures of wildlife, namely spiders, and would store them in old cigarette boxes. Said photos are currently being stored at the San Diego NAT Museum.

Your black friend un fumetto da ascoltare

Your Black Friend è il fumetto di un giovane artista di New Orleans. Ben Passmore ha realizzato un fumetto ispirandosi alla sua esperienza personale di black punk, raccontando la differenza che intercorre tra neri e bianchi in contesti punk underground. Brevi storie a fumetti che l’artista fotocopia in versione home made fino a quando un piccolo editore di San Francisco di nome Silver Sprocket ha deciso di ristamparlo a colori. Un passaggio obbligato che ha portato Passmore e l’editore a lavorare su una raccolta dal titolo YOUR BLACK FRIEND AND OTHER STRANGERS . 

Your Black Friend è diventato anche un piccolo corto animato

Le storie di Your Black Friend raccontano la disforia e la differenza tra bianchi e neri, nella qualità di vita, nei pregiudizi razziali che diventato spesso delle grottesche figuracce. Come nel caso in cui il protagonista del fumetto, seduto al tavolo di un bar, si trova costretto ad ascoltare un cliente (bianco) che racconta al barista (anch’esso bianco) che alla vista di un ragazzo (nero) in bicicletta nei pressi di un abitazione lo spinge a chiamare la polizia. Non fosse che il ragazzo in bicicletta sia un cliente abituale del bar che si accingeva a uscire da casa sua. E’ attraverso queste storie, amare, che l’autore vuole farci riflettere su quali siano oggettivamente le difficoltà per un ragazzo afroamericano rispetto a uno bianco. Come a volerci dire (a noi bianchi) siete tutti responsabili.
