"Where's your passport Gordon? Hm? Where the fuck is it?"
Several hundred tourists had to line under the hot sun waiting for the passport control at the port of the island of Rhodes on Monday. Three tourist boats had arrived at the same time with a total of 600 passengers.
Exhausted by the heat, a woman could stand no longer and fainted. She was immediately taken to the port clinic where she received first aid and recovered a little later.
The incident upset the tourists who were already protesting the waiting conditions and the inconvenience they were exposed to under the hot sun beams.
The port does not have any sun protection option, not even a simple awning. Not to mention benches or a waiting hall with chairs and A/C.
Travel agents have often received complaints by tourists who are surprised about the conditions.
According to local newspaper dimokratiki, the Municipal Port Fund had secured the money in order to install sun shade. However, the project was never materialized as the Archaeological Authority never gave permission for the tent. “Every attempt to place an awning or a canopy was met with the opposition of the Archaeological service,” the daily notes.
Cyclopes are traditionally depicted as craftsmen (carpenters, blacksmiths, etc.), but modern interpretations could take account of the relative advantages and disadvantages of stereoblindness. Stereoblindness results in loss of depth perception, which would make precise 3-dimensional tasks like hammering nails and judging distances/lengths more difficult. However, researchers believe stereoblindness can result in a greater ability to accurately render 3D images on a 2D plane (indeed, many artists learn to render depth by closing one eye). A cyclops would therefore best adapted to 2D tasks like reading, writing, painting/drawing, checking identification cards or passport control, or art/film/TV criticism. If the cyclops is also a giant, they may be exceptionally good at mapmaking/cartography, as they would be capable of surveying large areas, and rendering the topographical relief.
It’s a different experience at the airports now. There’s no TSA check as you’re leaving. You just look at a camera and go. There’s no passport control when you get back in the country either. We just got waived through. I thought something was wrong when all the Global Entry machines were closed, but I guess they’re just not in use anymore. You must get your picture taken the moment you get off the plane. It means I didn’t even have to take my glasses off.
What a world. It’s convenient in a way, but I still wish we hadn’t rolled over after 9/11. It scarred us so bad and we’ve never really reckoned with it.
UK Passport Control is a Nightmare
It’s harder to return to my own country than go to another, that in itself is annoying, but it’s even harder for my wife who needs a visa. She of course has one, and is perfectly allowed to re-enter the UK but despite this they still try and do everything they can to make it impossible for her. The main issue on this trip was with accessing her visa, because they couldn’t just give her a card…
