[My review of the new Marathon game]
(This is the review I posted to steam for the game)
I played the open beta for the game and played it on full release and its amazing. I really don't get all the hate for it. Its gotten to the point where people are straight up lying about supposed problems it has and about it being some sort of complete failure or total meltdown when its not in the slightest at all. People really have a stick up their ass about it and its funny to me because the game is fantastic and I really cant find a whole lot wrong with it. all of the "problems" people speak of seem to just be projecting and I am not even joking about that lol. Its an amazing game and its got me hooked. I have not had this much fun with a game or been this obsessed with playing a game this way in years and I have played many fantastic newer games. Its reminded me how fun games can really be when they are designed and made well. I wish people would get their heads out of their asses sometimes and stop judging something right off the cuff without having actually tried it. Its new and alot of things are different but I love its feeling and the spirit of the old original games are there if you take the time to look. Marathon is 11/10 and the haters can go suck alien cock. Dont listen to the morons making up lies. Look at the truth of what people have to say about the game being good and realize that it is 100% worth playing.
Now onto why its actually a legendary game.
The meta for the various shell/character abilities is tons of fun and fosters new ways of thinking of how to use the abilities.
The gun play is insanely smooth and feels amazing. Just shooting a gun feels fantastic. movement also feels great. Not too fast not to slow. Its balanced.
the looting is satisfying and adds a sense of exploration and discovery.
The aesthetic is amazing and the people complaining about it where also the people that thought stuff like mirrors edge was legendary lol so their complaints make no sense even by their own standards.
Many games besides mirrors edge have taken advantage of the style of bright popping colors against flat colors like white gray and black. people bitch about it being an eyesore while praising other games that did the exact same style. That should tell you most of what you need to know about the people that think this game is bad lol.
paid for goodies and systems like silk give the game tons of content while also not breaking game balance or making things feel unfair.
The music is perfect and gives a really great cyberpunk feel while also feeling like it without a doubt belongs in marathons world. Its not just random cyberpunk music its MARATHON music. The music in the lobby while you gear up and get ready to go on a run really gets me in the headspace to play well and also makes me think about the lore for all the games so far. It doesn't just sound good it amplifies the feeling of playing the game. It makes it feel alive.
The story is fantastic and is well placed in marathons complex preexisting lore. I wont spoil anything but the game seeks to answer some questions that we were left with after the original marathon game trilogy.
Bungies choice to throw the voltage back into this game series was not something that was taken lightly and I think people dont really understand that. Jason Jones is still at bungie and oversees all of the stuff that goes on. They did not do this to make a quick buck or to whore out the intellectual property. They took very good care of everything and making this game was the right thing to do at the right time.
Old heads will say they dont like how it does not feel like the older games in terms of looks or presentation and then the smart ones will change tune once they actually try it and then love every bit of it once they realize that the spirit is very much there and alive.
New bloods will buy into the lies people have been spewing about the game. The ones that move past that and try for themselves will find fun worth every penny paid for it and a lore rich story that makes for hours of fun lore diving.
This is probably gonna sound corny as hell but the original marathon games had such a big impact on my life. They changed how I thought about spirituality, philosophy, freedom, identity, and the concept of higher power as well as many other things. They also made me realize that kicking the ever loving fuck out of slave driving aliens is not only fun but ontologically correct and a moral obligation to the greater good. So seeing this game return means everything to me.
Weather you are an old head who was there for the original trilogy or new blood looking to see what its all about, this game is a love letter to you and all gamers from Bungie. BUY. THIS. GAME.
