Patricia Bath (November 4, 1942 – May 30, 2019) was an American ophthalmologist, inventor, and humanitarian, known for her groundbreaking contributions to eye surgery and medicine. She became the first African American woman doctor to receive a medical patent, which was for her invention of the Laserphaco Probe in 1986. This device revolutionized cataract surgery by using laser technology to remove cataracts with greater precision and less risk.

Day 16. Patricia Era Bath is an African-American ophthalmologist, inventor and academic. She has broken ground for women and African-Americans in a number of areas. Prior to Bath, no woman had served on the staff of UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute, headed a post-graduate training program in ophthalmology, or been elected to the honorary staff of the UCLA Medical Center (an honor bestowed on her after her retirement). Also, before Bath, no black person had served as a resident in ophthalmology at New York University and no black woman had ever served on staff as a surgeon at the UCLA Medical Center. In 1986, Bath invented the Laserphaco Probe, improving treatment for cataract patients. She patented the device in 1988, becoming the first African-American female doctor to receive a medical patent. The holder of four patents in total, Bath also co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, which established that "eyesight is a basic human right."
