THE STRANGE RELEASES NEW SINGLE

Vancouver duo The Strange has released a new single, titled “Ode to Ecstasy.” Burgeoning production skills on full display, Jack Di Blasio’s emphatic tone is peppered with beats and effects, likening a new relationship to the trance-like state. Alongside brother Patrick, the group continues to expand their openhearted and ominous pop rock sound; melodies with the ignition of a thousand stars.

Hailing from Vancouver, progressive pop duo The Strange has released their newest single, "Moving On." Jack and Patrick Di Blasio have evidently slowed down their sound with their latest track. It's an understated ballad, fleshed out with a dramatic piano introduction and tropical electronic plucks. Heightening its grainy, brooding tone with a spacious string arrangement, it retreats from the shame when creating distance in a relationship (“While saving face, I sold my soul”). Stream the new track below.

LOCAL BAND / MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR: 45 SPACER

As we wind down features for our 2016 “Local Band / Musician of the Year,” we wanted to take the opportunity to thank you all for reading our website, and for taking the time to vote! Today’s spotlight is on 45 Spacer, a brother duo that continues to excite with their evolving sound and stage show.

Jack and Patrick Di Blasio have been writing and performing together for over a decade, but it’s safe to say 2016 was the biggest year yet for 45 Spacer.

They released “Fly Away” last December, followed by the mature country rock anthem “All Night, Every Day” in February. Though a growing repertoire of singles is scattered in subject matter, their commanding and accessible melodies connect the dots. “I could have it all if I didn’t always dwell on the past,” Jack sings on “Fly Away,” speaking to the constricting nature of self doubt and everyday obstacles. They debuted two additional songs during an appearance on Roundhouse Radio in November; keys-driven ballads, listeners can glean a more solemn disposition from the band’s latest material.

I caught 45 Spacer’s live set twice this year, and both were solid displays of charisma and musicianship. Pop rock riffs to heart-pounding drum beats, their massive sound continues to grow and rival that of their influencers (U2, The Killers). The duo draws an impressive crowd at every appearance and do not take it for granted, encouraging grooves and earnest sing-along. They placed second at Landmark Canada’s Vancouver showcase, and played a gig at the famed Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood.

Burgeoning in energy and confidence, 45 Spacer is an ensemble that seems to be doing everything right in their young career.
