I know you talked about it awhile ago but in regards to maryse and robert getting an ineffective/light punishment. I think it adressed in the books as being because the lightwoods are such an important shadowhunter family, so i think its either just cause of that or an unknown family member really spoke up for them (i think they mention having cousins at some point). And the clave does sort of work like that. Beside it has an added layer of being the nyc institute where the whitelaws lived whom they slaughtered.
There’s alot too there punishment!! I kind of have two opinions about it!! While the punishment isn’t phenomenal, I also don’t think it’s the worst punishment ever!!
But YEAH! That’s the exactly what happened basically. The lightwoods had family connections which let them get off easier. Which is a really interesting contrast when you compare to Hodges story and his upbringing + how his punishment was handled and dealt with. TMI is sooo good with adding these extra layers to things. Actually on that note, we know that the Penhallows and Lightwoods were friends- maybe it was Jia or Patrick who voted for them?? We know that they ran the Beijing institute for awhile and there voice matters.
I’ve actually spoken more in-depth about Robery & Maryses before, (if anyone’s interested) BUT I feel like there’s a lot of aspects of there punishments that make it kind of bad when you do in fact think about it too much! To add onto your Whitelaws point, tmi made it a big point to show how much downworlders where in NYC, imagine having to work with these people you actively tried to murder, wouldn’t be fun for either Maryse or Robert. ALSO them running the institute basically means that the clave can see what thefe doing at all times whenever!! Look at how Imogen treated Maryse&Robert in city of ashes!!!
So yeah, there punishment is honestly really interesting!!! TY for the ask 🙏🏻 I love talking about the circle
