I'm going with the old day plus month equals patron.

Here's a chart for knowing your Western Zodiac sign if you don't know, and here's a chart for getting your patron troll, but also my mini explanation below:

So, if your birthday is August 17th, August is the 8th month, and then separate the 1 and 7, 8+1+7= 16, but there are 12 trolls, so start from the beginning and count up 4 more, 1. Aradia, 2. Tavros, 3. Sollux, 4. Karkat.
