Paper dresses to project onto.
Been a bit busy with all sorts of other nonsense recently so I have not really progressed with my ideas about video mapping patterns onto white dresses.
The principal idea is that if you project onto a flat object it just shows the pattern as flat, (no shit Sherlock!) but if the surface the light falls onto is 3D then the result is much more visually appealing, and you will have some better idea of what the fabric might look like when made up.
Due to my obsession with paper I have thought that the first thing to try would be to make some paper dresses, and they are fun to make and when I have done some very preliminary projecting they do look quite interesting.
Basic projection mapping when I have saved images from the program that generates the patterns is quite easy but I would like the output from Processing (the programming language I use) to go directly to VPT8 (the projection mapping software I use) and that is somewhat more challenging given my abilities. I know it can be done but it will take me some time to wrap my aged head around it.
I have also been laughing a bit to myself because I remember a very old and very silly limerick about a paper dress
A lovely young lady called Hall,
Wore a newspaper dress to a ball.
Her dress it caught fire,
And burnt her entire,
Front page, sporting section, and all.
I have also bought some white poly-cotton fabric to make a dress and bought a pair of small white cotton jeans from a charity shop to try projecting onto.

Check Pattern Maker II
Previously I have mentioned the possible rabbit holes to go down in the production of check patterns, that might subsequently become George fabric, and how to generate them. In that post I used a physical method, warp and weft coloured acetates of different colours and stripe thicknesses.
Here I have made similar random patterns programmatically in the computer language Processing. I created a series of warp and weft patterns in various colours and line and stripe thicknesses in Inkscape and wrote a program to choose randomly from these and combine them into a check pattern. I haven't done any programming for a while so I have had to think a bit, should really try to keep it up.
There are 6,480 possible variations of the modest number of colours and warp and weft stripes that I designed, and it would be easy to make this number much higher since I have only used red green and blue and a limited number of patterns of warp and weft and lines. The program could be made to save all its output, but the majority are not really that pleasing so it only saves those it is told to.
Although this method has been used to produce check patterns it would also lend itself to the generation of other fabric patterns.
The next part of the rabbit hole to explore is exhibiting the patterns as if they hade been made up into fabric and then clothing, I am tempted by projection onto white fabric draped dummies, not done any projection mapping for a while either.

and at the last Making Conversation meeting we looked at this and part of it was a pattern book and some samples of check fabric that is known in Nigeria as George cloth or George fabric.
This is an Indian cotton fabric design and has been exported to Nigeria for at least a couple of centuries. With of course the enthusiastic involvement of British textile companies and the use of slave labour in the growing of the cotton that was needed to weave the fabric.
I thought it might be interesting to make a Check Pattern Maker and so here we have a series of warp or weft slides in various colours and patterns and they can be mounted in the holder to display the current design.
I went back to look at the exhibition on another day and have noted in the sketchbook I took with me, that there does seem to be potential rabbit holes here involving the generation of patterns and the visualisation and exhibition thereof.
So things to think about and play with.

so, while I am waiting for a Debbie Greenlaw book to arrive, I have culled the internet and stolen all of their best advice to make a krokbragd coloring book pattern generator thingie. it allows for visualizing the pattern in two different ways, with explicit heddle positions for each pick, and includes an example draft. I spent all day yesterday making up new rugs and I think it's pretty useful, so am publishing it here, along with all the sources I used to make it.
it's a "drawing" file in LibreOffice, the awesome free desktop office software suite, and I made it on a mac (godspeed compatibility issues).
