I realized something quite interesting this morning and something I should have figured out sooner. Since I started writing years ago the consensus about learning to write is the aspiring writer must read. Read, read, read. Read what you like; read what you don't like; read the spectrum. Though reading does not make a writer, it does make a writer better.
Now you ask, what is this thing you realized? Well, I realized that following patterns others have written will allow me to eventually write patterns of my own, should I choose that direction. Good ones or bad ones, they all teach and they all serve a purpose in forming skill sets. So my collection of patterns is like my collection of books - just another way to build my toolbox into something spectacular.
How's that for excusing my pattern hoarding?
