A horse is a horse of course, but when sculptors put it on a pedestal they tend to be honoring the human who happened to be riding it. Paul Ramirez-Jonas, the mischievous conceptual artist whose Key to the City project unlocked mysteries around New York last summer, has conceived a new breed of equine sculpture. His piece The Commons, opening this week at Alexander Gray gallery, is a life-size military horse modeled after the statue of Marcus Aurelius at the Campidoglio in Rome. This one, though, is made of cork. The artist has provided push pins so that visitors can make it a monument to anything they want. Yeah or neigh?
