Paula Findlay. My favorite 2012 Olympian.

She's won World Championships all across the globe and had a real shot at a medal in London. But in the year leading up to the Games, she suffered a bunch of hip injuries and worked through the recovery. On August 4th she finished dead last in the women's triathlon, injured and devastated. She apologized - apologized - to the country.  My heart went out to her - she must have been just emotionally ruined. Poor thing. I can't imagine. But she f*cking finished that race. That takes enormous courage. She was injured, and knew she was last, but didn't drop out as many do. She made it. That's truly Canadian, to me. Determination, humility, courage. She didn't point fingers after the fact and blame anyone else. AND she didn't slink away into the shadows, quitting the sport in rage and humiliation. I know she'll be back, and she'll be better than ever. Major props, Paula Findlay. Canada is super proud of you. I don't think the Olympics is really about a country madly amassing as many medals as possible and pounding its chest about it. I think the Olympics is about athletes like Paula Findlay.

A very sad outcome for Findlay in London. An honest hard worker, real talent and an absolutely dominant performer when on her game. These revelations about mismanagement of her ongoing injuries are very hard to swallow.

Medals today! Sadly I missed them all, being at work. But I kept up online. So, congrats to Rosannagh MacLennan on her women's trampoline gold. Congrats to Ryan Cochrane on his silver in men's 1500m freestyle swim. And congrats to our women's cycling team with their bronze medal.

As well, the last image, of Canada's triathlon athlete, Paula Findlay. Paula, who apologized to her country, in tears, for coming in last place. A finish she wasn't happy with, due to injury and the resulting lack of training. I feel horrible that she thought she had to apologize for her finish. She shouldn't. That she tried so hard to win a medal for her country is something we should all applaud her for. So thank you, Paula.
