Todd: When I was younger, Dina told me that the paper strip in Hershey’s Kisses was edible, so I ate the paper with the chocolate for like a year.
Pauleen, snickering: They are edible.
Todd: FOR REAL?
Rupert: …Why would you fall for that again?
Dina, Dye, and Dissent
Without the aid of litres upon litres of hair dye, Dina is a brunette. However, ever since she was 11, she’s gone to a huge effort to maintain her bright orange hair. In part, it was inspired by the endless kpop CDs Uncle Stryker sent in from his South Korean office. (To this day, she‘s still furious as can be over 2NE1’s breakup, and can sing their entire oeuvre by heart.) However, the motive runs a little deeper than being a devout fangirl – for when she first dyed her hair, she’d just moved schools to escape bullying. Changing her appearance in that way was her attempt to reinvent herself. It worked – she’s been an artificial redhead for years.
However, when ZZ-as-Joe declared Dina a criminal, she realised that however effective a mask might be at obscuring her face, she’d need to go to further lengths to disguise herself sufficiently. Hence, she dropped the dye and cut her hair into a flapper bob. It wasn’t much, but it certainly rendered her less conspicuous. Meanwhile, as the media raged about her ‘betrayal’ and forged story upon story of her BB badness, debate broke out on Caliosteo. Rupert and Pauleen, when interviewed, had the gall and integrity to defend her and deny all claims of her wrongdoing. Although some took heart in their words, the majority scorned them for their presumed malevolence/foolishness. Rupert dug his feet in further – when he and Pauleen were next seen on camera, they both had a single lurid orange streak in their hair. (Marcus Harrison flew into a fit, of course.) Why? Solidarity for Dina, they asserted. Even before Dina’s return to Cranial to confront ZZ, many fighters poured their hearts out to her by dyeing a section of their hair orange.
But one young fighter, already half-stooped in envy and fear, didn’t. Todd was already growing sick of Dina – the words ZZ enticed him to release had been prepared long ago. It’s just that Todd, possibly for self-disgust and possibly for cowardice, had swallowed his feelings and pushed them beneath his other insecurities.
in a fossil fighters mood tonight so here’s some WIPs of some best girls
Alright! So I finally wrote out each of the alternate champions AU for FF:C. I’ll put them under the cut since they’re kinda long
Champion!Rupert AU
-Rupert and Dina face off in the finals, and Rupert wins. Joe calls him up to his suite right after the battle, and he goes alone, telling his friends that it shouldn’t take long.
-Rupert is possessed by ZZ the moment the sorcerer reveals his plans at the meeting. Joe flies by on B-Ptera to help him but arrives too late. However, he is able to notify Dina and Todd in time and they flee to the BB Base. Pauleen’s whereabouts are unknown and the pair is worried about her. Dina is able to convince Todd to stay and fight, and he does not flee the base (though he does run outside in frustration, but comes to his senses soon after and apologizes).
-Eventually, they all meet up back on Cranial Isle where Pauleen has discovered how to infiltrate Wildwest Tower (as she was able to avoid suspicion by not being around the others.) Todd is never put under ZZ’s spell because of this. Everything proceeds as usual up until just after they obtain the Caliosteo Pipsqueak.
-Todd and Pauleen stay outside to fight off the staff members, and Joe holds off the employees at the elevator as Dina goes to knock ZZ’s skull out of Rupert’s head. The plan proceeds as usual up until ZongaZonga’s skull flees, where DINA takes the hit in the elevator and gets possessed. Rupert then has to save her from ZongaZonga’s control and goes to the castle to do so (even though his dad doesn’t want him to go but no one cares about his dad’s opinion).
Champion!Pauleen AU
-Pauleen wins against both Dina in the semi-finals and Rupert in the finals, securing her spot as champion.
-When “Joe” asks her to speak with him in his suite, Pauleen still isn’t 100% comfortable with one-on-one conversation and asks Dina to come with her for support.
-Same plot as usual, and real Joe saves them. They eventually make their way back to Cranial Isle where Rupert and Todd bump into them. Todd causes a distraction so everyone can flee, and Pauleen is beyond distraught once they reach the BB Brigade Base as Todd could be in danger.
-Everything else plays out as normal with Pauleen playing Dina’s role for the rest of the story. She fights Todd and she knocks ZongaZonga out of Joe’s head in a fit of frustration at him hurting her friends. She is beyond satisfied at herself for standing up on her own, but knows it was only possible because of her friends.
-All of her hopes are crushed, though, when Rupert is possessed. Feeling partly responsible, PAULEEN goes to fight ZongaZonga so she can save Rupert. She is finally able to overcome her fears and stay strong so that she can save her friends and the park and comes to realize that even though her friends helped her begin to overcome her fears and anxiety, SHE made the decision to try and help herself, and her strength is hers and hers alone.
-Also ultimate bff duo Todd and Dina save the pair from the castle uwu
Champion!Todd AU
-This one ended up waaaay more complex than I wanted it to, lol. It’s also much different from the other two champion AUs.
-Todd takes Rupert’s words to heart after their battle at Treasure Lake and reconfigures his team, defeating Dina in Round 1. He goes on to work hard to get through the competition, but is still plagued by his cowardice, leading Dina to investigate most of the incidents on the island. Dina still stops all the BBB sabotages and goes against Don Boneyard at the base, leaving Todd feeling guilty because while he’s doing well in the competition, he’s still too scared to help his best friend.
-Everything goes the same from then on out (aside from the Cup battles, where Todd assumes Dina’s role). Todd defeats Pauleen and Rupert in their respective rounds, the Dina and him confront ZongaZonga at Wildwest Tower where they are then cornered and subsequently saved by actual Joe and his B-Ptera.
-Todd is beyond terrified of ZongaZonga and agrees with Joe’s pleas to leave. This leads to Dina getting upset and fleeing the base to do something about the sorcerer. Todd, fearing for her safety, follows (with some encouragement from Joe) after contemplating what to do for several minutes.
-As Todd bumps into Rupert and Pauleen after the announcement that he is with the BB Brigade and the two side with him, they are surrounded. DINA is the one that runs to his aid and apologizes for yelling at him. She says she understands why he’s afraid and that he can still run; she won’t get mad and she’ll take care of everything. But he says no, that he will stay and fight because his friends are more important than his fears. At that moment, she battles the staff leaders so her three friends can escape. Todd is worried for Dina as the trio flees back to the base.
-Dina, though powerful, loses. Todd is later forced to battle her after obtaining the Pipsqueak (aka they swap roles when it comes to the battle before the one with ZZ!Joe).
-Again, everything progresses as normal up until Rupert is possessed. When Todd is handed the skull and realizes what has happened at the Stone Pyramid, he’s filled with rage and all of them come up with the plan to save Rupert.
-Dina agrees to be the one to go after ZongaZonga, but Todd tells her it has to be him. He knows she’s more powerful than him, and he knows that he’s not as brave as her, but he let her solve all the island’s problems and get captured despite knowing he could do something about it all. He was rude to Pauleen and Rupert, too, countless times (even though they had both forgiven him and moved on at that point). HE needs to make up for it, and HE is the one ZongaZonga is after, so HE will fight.
-At the final battle, ZongaZonga is annoyed and tries to get to Todd by bringing up his insecurities. At that point, Todd realizes that the only reason he’s so afraid is because he feels inadequate to everyone else. But he won the Cup, he’s the champion, and he made the decision to come here to save Rupert and everyone else. He yells back at ZongaZonga saying he’s not going to stand around and let everyone handle his problems for him anymore. He defeats ZongaZonga and saves Rupert, then Dina and Pauleen save the two of them from the collapsing castle.
-At the official winner’s ceremony, Joe tells Todd that he’s proud of how far he’s come from the first time they met, and how no matter what, he knows he’s always cared for his friends even if he didn’t let them know in the way that he should. Todd, Dina, Rupert, and Pauleen all hug and look forward to battling in the next Cup, and Todd goes on to continue to work on himself and his insecurities.
