What a journey! 40+ years of service and life sustaining impact. Merci Dr. Farmer. I wish we honored him more in life, his work transcends through many lives. His legacy through his children. My sincere condolences to his family. Rest In Peace. A great loss… #paulfarmer #haiti #humanitarian #humanist #visionaryhumanist #nyfoh #nyfriendsofhaiti2010 https://www.instagram.com/p/CaTA2JSrjdk/?utm_medium=tumblr
A giant has fallen. Dr. Paul Farmer, founder of Partners In Health, world-changer, social justice advocate, liberationist theologian, has died at 62. Far, far too soon. His notion of "pragmatic solidarity" transformed my teaching, my rabbinate, my life. We should all take the time to read everything he wrote. Even better, read "Mountains Beyond Mountains," Tracy Kidder's tale of Farmer's visionary work. Best yet, read the powerful paragraph below, excerpted from a 2005 interview with Farmer conducted by the Stanford Social Innovation Review and do what he says: "leave arguing aside and find a way to make projects work in poverty-stricken and disease-burdened areas." May the memory of Paul Farmer ztz"l inspire great action. _____________________________ From "15 Minutes with Paul Farmer" https://ssir.org/articles/entry/15_minutes_with_paul_farmer "The naysayers may still outweigh those who believe it can and must be done. But who are these naysayers? Are they people living in dire poverty? Do people living in poverty ever say to us, “Don’t bother to try to address this health problem in our community, there are too many obstacles”? In 20 years, I’ve never heard it from that quarter. It’s usually “experts” like me who underline the obstacles as a way of stopping the conversation and hence the admittedly colossal output of energy it takes to address all these obstacles. When there’s a constant undertow of censorious opinion from decision makers, it’s often best to leave arguing aside and find a way to make projects work in poverty-stricken and disease-burdened areas. Then you can say, “Look, it’s possible.”' #PaulFarmer #PragmaticSolidarity #BuildOnLove #ItsPossible https://www.instagram.com/p/CaQ2qs6NxAW/?utm_medium=tumblr
Read it again in Paul Farmers memory. He made the world a better place #paulfarmer #tracykidder https://www.instagram.com/p/CaQqJxROOqb/?utm_medium=tumblr
In 2006, I was an eager young medical student who was interested in global health. I was told one day that legendary physician and humanitarian, Paul Farmer, was at Berkeley giving a talk, so I rushed over after class to meet him. I knew only superficially of his work at the time- that he had done work in Haiti, that he had taught generations of medical students and residents. If only I knew what I knew now, I would have held the meeting with more respect and awe. However, despite my ignorance (and the long line of people wanting to talk to him), Dr. Farmer pulled me aside and listened to me about my recent medical trip to Cuba, and how i had been so influenced by the HIV clinics and healthcare system there. He shared with me just a tiny bit of his vast global health experience, and told me to never let the Big Picture out of my sight. I would go home later and learn so much more about him. He certainly was a driving force and inspiration in my next few medical missions- the rural clinic in post-Katrina Biloxi, the emergency care in Port-Au-Prince after the 2010 earthquake. And I would always recall not only the words he spoke to me, but the patience, understanding, and compassion that he showed me. #PaulFarmer #globalhealth #inmemoriam https://www.instagram.com/p/CaP41uKpej8/?utm_medium=tumblr

A few years ago I was lucky enough to find myself in a Structural Violence class at MSUDenver where I was introduced to Dr. Paul Farmer’s writings and work. Since coming to Vanuatu I have read 4 of his books. Find out some of the many things I learned from reading them in my latest blog post (link in bio). #paulfarmer #peacecorps #peacecorpsvanuatu @partnersinhealth (at Maewo) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnujLUBn8YG/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1d28rb0olvdwg
