So tonight's Acquisitions Incorporated game at PAX Unplugged is using Daggerheart? Not just a one-off like their Star Wars or Call of Cthulhu games, but a reboot to level 1 and permanent switch from D&D? And Matt Mercer is joining as a player? That's big damn news, y'all.

For those who don't know, Acquisitions Incorporated often gets credited as the first major Live Play TTRPG group. Opinions may differ, the way fan communities are fractured on the internet makes it hard to research this kind of thing with any precision, but it's certainly the first Live Play TTRPG group I ever heard of.

It was co-sponsored directly by WotC originally as a way to show off D&D 4E material while the edition was still in playtesting, and the original players were Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik of Penny Arcade, and Scott Kurtz of PvP. Kurtz is long gone (that's a guy who hasn't got a lot of friends left in any of the creative communities he's part of, but that's a story for another time) but Holkins and Krahulik, in addition to running one of the most successful Webcomics of all time, are the founders of the PAX conventions and are still deeply involved in their operations. AcqInc never got quite as huge as Critical Roll, Dimension 20, or the Adventure Zone, but the AcqInc games at a given PAX always packed the theaters to the limit and got pretty big viewership online, and for the last 15 years AcqInc has been one of WotC's most high-profile vessels for promoting upcoming content and storylines.

Also AcqInc was the first major platform on which Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford went from being just anonymous WotC employees to the unofficial brand ambassadors, because they were both AcqInc's GMs for several years each, and sometimes AcqInc players under other GMs. This of course meant that Holkins and Krahulik had a stronger relationship to Perkins and Crawford than to WotC itself, so when Perkins and Crawford both left WotC to work for Critical Role on Daggerheart, in retrospect I guess a shift like this was inevitable.

Still. It's got to sting for WotC.

I'm planning to go to Pax Unplugged 2026 in Philly this winter. I'm really hoping to maybe do a table for one of the days. I need to start planning, budgeting, and ordering. What would everyone be most interested in from my nonsense as far as purchases and freebies?

(I plan to do an order sheet format for clothing so people can request items/sizes/colors/characters as they please and get them done locally and ship them out myself).

I'm dreaming of meeting some of you beautiful people from our community. ❤️

Today's game at PAX: Sons of the Phoenix (proxying as Dark Angels) vs Death Guard. The other player deployed first, and put poxwalkers near the center objective. Their deathshrouds were in deep strike. I put my chapter master (Azrael proxy) and a squad of inner circle companions, as well as a captain and a squad of bladeguard in a Land Raider Crusader. I deployed conservatively, expecting my opponent to get first turn. Instead I did.

Turn 1 I moved up the land raider and the chapter master and his squad disembarked. Clonegrim (Lion El'Johnson proxy) also moved up, both units intending to engage the poxwalkers. I advanced one terminator squad, led by a captain, onto the left objective, and maneuvered the other to be able to charge the right objective next turn. The land raider took out a bunch of the poxwalkers, and shooting from Clonegrim, the right terminator squad, and the inner circle squad took out most of the rest, leaving four left. Clonegrim and the inner circle then failed their charge rolls against the poxwalkers. The death guard player moved up their war dog and blight hauler on the left, and their bloat drone and rhino on the right, and scored points for Recover assets. The blight hauler and war dog shot at the terminators and intercessors on the left, but I managed to make all my saves.

Turn 2 clonegrim went into reserves to deep strike, and the inner circle squad moved up towards the poxwalkers. The land raider moved towards the bloat drone and dropped the bladeguard to charge it and the rhino with the right terminator squad also moving up to charge. The death guard player than rapid ingressed three deathshroud led by a lord of virulence. The chapter master and inner circle squad shot three of the remaining poxwalkers, which were then finished off by the land raider. The land raider then got a couple hits off the bloat drone. The gladiator valiant dealt a few wounds to the blighthauler, but did not score a kill. The inner circle squad then charged the deathshrouds, lot a model to overwatch, and killed all but the lord of virulence. The lord of virulence then hit back and killed three of the inner circle marines. The bladeguard charged and killed the bloat drone before consolidating into the rhino. Both terminator squads failed their charge rolls. The other squad of deathshroud (this one a 6-man unit) then deep struck in position to charge the inner circle squad, with Typhus dropping further back. The plague marines disembarked from the rhino, and the rhino fell back. The plague marines took out most of the bladeguard in the shooting phase. Typhus tried to use his eater plague ability and instead took a mortal wound. The deathshroud then charged the inner circle and the plague marines charged the bladeguard. The deathshrouds killed the inner circle squad, but I used a stratagem to give them fight on death, allowing them to take out the lord of virulence and one of the deathshrouds. I then used the counter-offensive stratagem to have the bladeguard fight before the plague marines could pick them apart. The captain took out three od them and thr bladeguard took out one, and then the bladeguard were wiped out and the captain took a couple wounds.

We called it at the second battle round as the convention was closing and we were out of time.

One Flesh One End

For PAX Unplugged this past year I cosplayed my gender, Gideon, pure of heart, dumb of ass. We had outside a cute little ninth house group, and I cannot stress how much it rules hanging out with someone taller than you ( I’m 6’4” for the record)
