it's really good if you're getting engaged and worried about the movement to censor speech online! but...
do not worry about S.1671 - Interstate Obscenity Definition Act. I keep seeing people panicking about this. do not. don't waste your time.
"but it's really scary" yes and it's never passing.
the Interstate Obscenity Definition Act:
* is sponsored by Mike Lee, who has introduced thousands of stunt bills. none have passed.
* has zero cosponsors
* was referred to committee in May
* nothing has happened with it since
it's not a real bill and should not be a priority.
if you're getting involved (good!) you can and should learn how to look up the status of legislation, both for the federal government and for your state.
you can find Lee's dumb stunt bill, which again has not had any updates in a third of a year, here:
Summary of S.1671 - 119th Congress (2025-2026): Interstate Obscenity Definition Act
here is a list of bills that Mike Lee both sponsored, and have actually passed. you will note there are six of them, they're all shit like "rename this building the Atticus Childbridehaver Hospital", and these six are less than 1% of the 2000! bills! Lee introduced
Mike Lee, the Senator from Utah - in Congress from 2011 through Present
it's really good to get engaged but not if your whole engagement is consuming panic button posts, which I'm seeing a lot with both censorship and trans rights. you have agency here to learn about this legislation and whether it's actually a serious threat!
