cardboard cotman paynes cloud

watercolor on raw cardboard, ~8x11" there's nothing like working on unprepared cardboard trash. this piece was cut from a large shipping box. the fibers were less compact than the cardboard I typically work on. i find it fascinating to see how different fibers handle paint with staining and granulating pigments. this is an old tube of cotman (w&n) payne's gray (pbk7, pb29, pb15). ...i spend a lot of time studying lightfast pigments only to get the most joy out of putting them onto very acidic canvases; i wonder why?

Only two colors used and i am already getting a feel that this painting might take a lot more time than i first expected... at least there’s a good tooth to the sketchbook cover so the paint’s clinging pretty readily
