It is on HBO so I decided to watch it. I guessed that it would be weak because they cast the lead with little boobs to be PC, but it is much worse than that.
Everything about the actress exudes ‘mousy’. She exudes fear and ‘escape’, is self-doubting. The Lara Croft I know is (besides big-boobed) self-assured, more likely to cause a fight than run from one and faces Death himself with a challenging grin.
This Lara Croft is mousy, twig-thin and acts as fragile, uses high pitched squeals of a school girl instead of grunts of fighter, tries to run away at every turn, hardly throws a punch and barely kicks more than she punches, always resorting to ‘choke-hold’ that any yellow belt could get out of.
Just plane disappointing through and through.
First, she doesn’t want to claim her inheritance because it will be admitting her father is dead, rather than claiming it and turning it all to find him.
Second she ‘does what daddy says’ with a puzzle box and key but when she discovers that the key leads to where her daddy went she goes back to hoping he is alive and goes off to find him.
But she inherited a mansion with tons of valuable stuff in it as well as a company that owns their own skyscraper, however she has to sell a trinket for a tiny fraction of its value to go to Hong Kong. What? I would have fired the writers right there.
The when she gets to Hong Kong she gets her pack snatched right off her back, runs down and tackles the one of three boys who took her pack then puts him in a terrible choke hold that gave him perfect position to mess her day all up, and he just hangs there helplessly. Some Hong Kong Dockside Thug there! Then one of the other boys pulls a knife that wasn’t long enough to cut through a Texas Steak and she runs off like the mouse she is. This ends with Lara needing to be rescued by a drunkard with a gun.
Yes, kids, that’s right, Lara Croft needed a MAN to rescue her from three little boys!
A bit later she is the ‘guest’ of the bad-guy in his tent. After they chat a bit he has one of his men take her out of the tent and this man proceeds to push Lara Croft around, not one push but several, and Lara does nothing, zero, zip. And she doesn’t even have her hands tied yet!
The Lara I grew up with would never allow a MAN to put their hands on her without making that MAN sorry for it, even if she had to stare down twenty gun barrels a split second later.
Shortly after that some red-shirt-slave gets sick. Lara and her drunken-sailor rescuer of earlier (who is also a captive slave now) appeal to Big Bad Guy Bossman to have mercy and let the guy rest. Of course Bad Guy shoots red-shirt. Bad Guy then points the gun at Lara and she starts shaking and nearly breaks down into tears. Now Lara might not go full Martin Riggs but she would not turn to a pile of sobbing mush either.
This is then followed by a bunch of squealing as she makes her escape from Bad Guy Bossman.
Bad Guy Bossman sends his Number One to go get Lara back. He sneaks up on her and ambushes her, in a camp she had hours to set up but not one single trap was laid and he was even enough of an elephant to wake her from sleep first. She bites his arm to get out of his grasp, tries to crawl away like the mouse this pretender is, Gets tossed around like a rag doll as she continues to try to crawl away, does one punch to center body mass and a completely ineffective kick of shin to side, gets into a wrestling match when that fails, and goes to that old choke hold that wouldn’t secure a Lamb. This wasn’t a Bad Ass Fight, it was pathetic!
After this horrid fight scene Lara looks stunned and saddened that she killed someone who was trying to kill her. Then she moused up and went squeaking back into the dark jungle.
If this wasn’t bad enough yet, they had to resurrect her father, a MAN, so patch up her wounds for her. The writers/director was even poor enough to have Daddy Dearest sew her up before applying the antiseptic. Idiots!
Then cut to what, second or third time the Bad Guy Minions are wasting ammo by firing their machine guns up into the air for no reason whatsoever all to overly dramatic music.
Daddy Issues then motivates Lara to grow a pair as she grabs a bow and a Quiver of Holding to take on the entire Bad Guy Army solo. More Daddy Issues makes her betray her father’s wishes and give in to Bad Guy Bossman’s demands and open the Puzzle-Locked doorway.
Once it is open the weak armed Lara Croft pretender needs a motorized doohicky to repel down into the cave. Weak, very weak! I have seen those doohickies before but they were used to pull people out of caves that are in a rescue basket, not to lower a healthy mouse into a cave.
Soon a trap is sprung and after much load clicking and rolling sounds with accompanying dramatic music, a few six-foot long spikes jump up out of the floor, impale one guy, and disappear below again. Then Daddy Dearest says, “Those weren’t meant to keep people out! They were meant to keep people in!”
Like wtf?! Those were meant to kill people, what the hell is Daddy Dearest going on about?
Next scene there is a chasm filled with half the skeletons in China. A forty foot ladder magically appears to allow the party to cross this oh-so-scary space. Truth be told, I have never seen such a bouncy nearly-new ladder before in my life. This is a guy that has done construction for a large part of his life and knows quite a few ladder-tricks.
After a little puzzle solving and more mousy fights with atrocious kicks and other moves, a drunken sailor once more comes to Lara Mouse’s rescue.
The Lara Croft I know rescues men, not the other way around.
In the end she finally finds out some info which she seams to ignore for now and gets a pair of guns that the twigster can barely lift.
Everything from the impossible lighting, incomprehensible sets, questionable physics (and other sciences), poor dialog, un-Bad Ass script, to the Daddy Issues and the piss poor casting, it was all off.
If it wasn’t for me having so much fun destroying this so-called movie, it would have been a complete waste of time.
And it isn’t like Hollywood doesn’t have stars that would make a great Lara Croft, so great a Lara Croft it would almost be type-casting. For instance this gal:
Fell free to tell her that she would make a worse Lara Croft than the mouse they had in the last movie, to her face, I double dog dare ya!
