#internationalwomensday became a week-long celebration and conversation in many of my classes. Here in my advanced English class, following a discussion about gender stereotypes, my students imagined what they would like and dislike if they were the other sex. Highlights: one boy said he would enjoy wearing lipstick to be beautiful and the girls shared their excitement about not needing to wear makeup. #pcmorocco #gender #peacecorps #morocco #howiseepc #darshabab #youthdevelopment #شباب

So far, every Moroccan home I've been in has had a room like this: ponges, pillows, elaborate curtains, all in a room dedicated for special occasions. I thought my host family already had their special-occasion-room across the hall, the room with a TV. So you can imagine my surprise when I opened the door to the storage room and all of a sudden I saw THIS. And if they get bored of the turquoise, they have replacements in red, brown, and yellow. #peacecorps #morocco #salon #hostfamily #elaborate #interiordesign #pcmorocco #howiseepc #peacecorpscribs

Four kilometers from my town is this lone house. It sits above a floodplain, and for a very specific reason: whoever lives there is responsible for alerting my city (and, by extension, the communes inside of it and the duwars and qsars inside of them) that the floods have arrived. The man living here now was elected by the community, and the job rotates throughout the different tribes in the community. Though he is not a government employee officially, he does receive payment via a mutually-agreed-upon tax system that also ensures every household with fields has equal access to the irrigation canals. It is an elaborate and unique system that doesn't scream for attention, but it's a critical one.
