Quiet and tired, it had been a long couple of days. From mission planning, to raids, to following the threads of investigation.
Honestly, Denzel couldn’t quite believe they had found them alive.
It still felt like a little bit of a dream, stings always did. The moment you suited up, and checked your weapon, the moment you kicked the door down, the fight, every fucking second in-between, it was all fuelled by adrenaline. That was why it took training, it wasn’t about the fighting itself, it was about the ability to stay level headed when the bullets and swords were flying.
Space, was something he had needed afterwards. The guilt stirred up by something so personal was difficult to deal with, Cloud and Tifa needed space to process what had happened. Sure, Denzel had drifted some what from his adoptive family but…why hadn’t it been him?
He would have been there but…he couldn’t. Denzel buried himself into paper work, sat at his desk in the bullpen repeating to people, ‘I’m fine,’ as he drank his third coffee. A sleepless night. A restless day. Agitated and distracted, maybe the fact that he knew what he needed to do…and he couldn’t bring himself to do it.
He had to go see him.
It was late into his shift when he finally managed to bring himself to walk into the hospital ward. Denzel slipped his hands into the pockets of his jeans, leaned against the door frame and offered a small smile.
“Hey,” well, Denzel had always been a person of few words.
