We are pleased to announce that we have added Dr. Leon Sigal as a speaker for CFPA's 39th Annual Conference and Multifaith Service for Peace on Sunday, November 11 in Princeton, headlined by the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Amb. Wendy Sherman!

Great Neck Peace Action to remember bombing victims

The Great Neck chapter of the pacifist non-profit organization Peace Action will hold a commemoration on Aug. 6 for the 69th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset.

The event, co-sponsored by the Long Island Alliance for Peace and the congregation’s social justice committee, will focus on the danger of nuclear annihilation and the potential dangers the world faces in the present day, officials said.

“The world was really shaken by the first nuclear explosion. It was so devastating. It took years for people to really understand it. The earth could really be devastated. The program is a time to remind people of that,” said Shirley Romaine, a board member of Peace Action’s Great Neck chapter and the founder of the Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives.

Peace Action was founded in 1957 as the Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy in response to the stockpiling of nuclear weapons by the United States and former Soviet Union during the Cold War. Peace action formed in 1987 after SANE merged with another antiwar organization, the Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign.

The commemoration, whose theme is “It is time to abolish nuclear weapons, climate change and war,” is dedicated in memory of Jonathan Schell, an anti-nuclear activist, teacher and writer who died in March.

“Schell wrote the seminal book [the Los Angeles Times Book Prize-winning “The Fate of the Earth”] about the effects of nuclear power,” Romaine said. “‘Fate of the Earth’ really made a major impression.”

A panel of state Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel (D-Great Neck), Hofstra University history professor Michael D’Innocenzo, Mark Lukens, chairman of the Interfaith Alliance of Long Island; and Margaret Melkonian, the director of Long Island for Peace Alternatives, will hold a roundtable discussion about the potentiality of nuclear disarmament and the human costs of war.

“The main goal is to make people conscious of the fact that we have more rather than less nuclear weapons,” Romaine said. “I certainly hope that attendees consciousness is awakened or introduced.”

It is rare...to find women's groups with an adherence to non-violence and commitment to transformation of the state (be it for increased freedom of expression, democracy, or the end of a military occupation) that explicitly consider and plan against the use of violence by others (the state or nonstate actors). In other words, women activists, similar to ordinary people and peace activists more generally, are not effective at strategizing for worst-case scenarios. Hope for change and a better future is a powerful fuel and motivator, but it is not a strategy for dealing with the reality of communal violence or warfare. Perhaps it goes against human nature; perhaps change comes slowly and anything worse is too difficult to image; or perhaps it is easier to think of the eruption and escalation of violence - the chaos and random attacks; the assault and rape of women; betrayal by a neighbor, school friends, or colleagues - as something that happens to others, in faraway countries. Many a resident of Sarajevo thought so, even as Serbian troops were rampaging across the countryside, just a hundred miles away. Many Iraqis who supported the ouster of Saddam could not fathom a worse situation or believe that sectarianism and criminality would become the norm.
