summary: Alec Lightwood never believed in good or bad luck, but after finding out he's roommates with his highschool nemesis Magnus Bane..he's beginning to think he's cursed
aka the enemies to friends to lovers fic that no one asked for
Magnus’s amber cat eyes shot open as the last remaining echo of the painful memory lingered in his mind. The smell of burning candles, the soft sound of the crickets nearby, and the warm breeze of the late night wind felt all too real as he stared at the dark ceiling of his bedroom, which was slightly illuminated by the dim lamp at the bedside table. He took in a deep heavy breath as he tried to calm down his already trembling form. Then a moment later, he realized that there were already a flood of silent tears streaming down his face.
He knew that sleep was something he just couldn’t do, especially right now. Every time he closed his eyes and let himself drift off, all he could see behind his eyelids was his mother's lying form in her old bed, a pool of blood surrounding her as a huge blade was sticking out from her chest.
Magnus bit back an awful sob as he tried desperately to push that image away from his head. As he sniffed back the tears, he turned his head to the side and saw Alec’s curled up figure beside him, looking peaceful and fully unaware of what’s happening with him. He watched as his boyfriend's shoulders and chest rise up lightly with each breath he took, accompanied by the sound of muffled snores that Magnus grew to love. As he quietly stared at his Alexander's sleeping face, Magnus contemplated on whether or not he should wake Alec up—just as he asked him to do earlier.
“Magnus, if things get bad again, please tell me. I don’t care if it happens during the day or in the middle of the night—I just don’t want you to face this on your own.”
“Don’t worry, Alexander. I’ll be fine. I promise I’ll be here when you wake up in the morning.”
He reached his hand out and carefully pushed away a few strands of hair that fell on Alec’s forehead. Looking at how comfortable his boyfriend is right now, Magnus decided that he didn’t want to bother him anymore with his own problems, and he thought that it just seems unfair for Alec to bear this burden even when it’s not his to begin with.
“I’m sorry, love.” he whispered, his voice cracking. He deliberately scooted closer to his Alexander, and placed a soft kiss on his forehead. When he was sure that Alec didn’t wake up from that, he let out an unsteady sigh and gently moved away from his sleeping boyfriend.
He slowly sat at the edge of their bed, and he felt the familiar heavy feeling on his chest weighed him down again. As he tried to shrug out some tension on his bare shoulders, he lifted a shaking hand and nervously rubbed it at the back of his neck. He could feel the tears forming in his eyes again, and he took a sharp intake of breath as he stared at the space in front of him.
Please, just pull yourself together, he pleaded to himself as he ran his fingers through his hair. He just couldn’t stop crying, damn it. Feeling defeated, he closed his eyes and let them flow freely down his cheeks. Okay, just think of something else.
After a beat, he heard a sleepy and hoarse voice calling out from behind him.
“Magnus?”
When the voice finally registered in his head, Magnus's eyes opened widely in a flash. He took a big gulp, and just stayed frozen in his place as he felt the bed shift slightly at the other side. Everything around him clicked on his mind and he hurriedly wiped the remnants of tears on his face. He tried his best to find composure, and he pushed himself to put on a brave face as he felt a pair of hands placing a soft fabric around his body. Somewhat confused and curious, he looked down at himself and realized that the fabric was his cobalt blue robe. He glanced at the hand on his shoulder and followed it up until his bloodshot amber eyes met a pair of beautiful hazel ones, which shined like gold from the little light of the room.
“Hey,” Alec whispered as he gently sat down beside him, placing an arm around his lower back. Magnus noticed that there’s still a hint of drowsiness in his boyfriend’s face, but there’s also a serious look of concern and worry in them.
Seeing that expression on Alec’s face, he swallowed hard and fought back the urge to break down at that very moment. To balance himself down, Magnus reached out and rested his hand on Alec’s upper thigh, just above the knee. He tried to make himself sound normal when he spoke up, but he failed as his voice cracked at the end. “Hey.”
Alec’s face soften at the sound of his voice breaking, and Magnus went still as his boyfriend slowly lifted a hand to cup his tear-stained cheek. He leaned into the touch, and Alec’s thumb gently brushed through it with so much care that it somehow managed to calm him down. As he closed his eyes, Magnus felt the space beside him shift as his boyfriend leaned closer to him, and bumped his forehead to his temple. He could feel Alec’s warm breath at the side of his face, and he tried to match his breathing with him. Soon enough, the heavy feeling on his chest subsided, and the tears finally stopped falling. With a sigh, Magnus placed his other hand above Alec’s, and he let his thumb caress it as a way to silently say thank you.
“Do you want me to make you some tea?” Alec whispered, his other hand rubbing some tension away from Magnus's back.
Magnus angled his head slightly to the side, almost bumping his nose to Alec’s. He chose not to speak, and instead, he just quietly nodded as his Alexander breathed out a sigh.
“Okay,” Alec mumbled, reaching up to the side of Magnus's head and placing a soft kiss on the temple. Carefully, he untangled himself from his boyfriend and slowly stood up. When he faced Magnus, he reached down to take his boyfriend’s hands on his own, and gently guided the High Warlock up from the bed. “Come on, let’s get you some chamomile tea.”
“Okay,” Magnus said quietly, his throat felt rough after not using it for so long.
He stood up from the bed, fixed his cobalt blue robe around his body, and placed both of his arms on the sleeves. As he did so, he watched as his Alexander grabbed the discarded maroon shirt on the floor and put it on. When both of them had settled those comfortable clothes on, Alec took hold of Magnus’s hand and guided him out of the room.
The entire loft was relatively quiet and dark, with the delicate muted sound of the borough outside seemingly breaking the absolute stillness. It was almost pitch black when they emerged from the bedroom, with only the faint light of the city lights trying desperately to shine past the thick curtain on the tall windows. Magnus watched as his boyfriend reached his hand out to the wall beside him to find the light switch. With a hint of a small smile on his face, he snapped his fingers and the room’s dim lights immediately lit up. As he looked around the place, he could feel Alec’s eyes on him, and he turned to see those hazel eyes staring at him with a gentle expression behind them. His lips turned into a delicate smile, and he gave Alec’s hand a light squeeze. Alec looked relieved to see a smile on his lips, and placed a quick kiss on his hand before guiding him again towards the room.
They both found themselves in the living room area, where the big chandelier shined elegantly in a comforting way. Alec led his boyfriend to the big leather sofa in the middle of the room, and he gestured towards it as the Magnus raised a perfect eyebrow in confusion.
“Here, sit down while I make the tea.” his boyfriend explained, a gentle smile appearing on his face.
Magnus relaxed and nodded, and gracefully sat down on his sofa behind him. He made himself comfortable as he watched his Alexander’s retreating figure disappear towards the kitchen.
When Alec was no longer there, Magnus's attention drifted to the light blue chair that stood opposite from his place on the sofa. At the sight of it, his thoughts instantly went back to the conversation they had a few hours earlier, when he finally found the strength and courage to let Alec know about his childhood and past struggles—including the trauma he faced while stuck in Valentine’s body.
“Alexander, I’m so sorry for hiding all of this from you. I just—I never wanted you to see this terrible, ugly side of me.”
“Magnus, you don’t have to be afraid about letting me in. I’m not going anywhere, okay? I love you—every single part of you. The best, the worst, the beautiful, the ugly… everything. Your heart and soul means everything to me, and I don’t want you to go through this on your own.”
“Magnus?”
He jumped slightly on his seat, and he shook his head as he tried to bring his thoughts back to the present. He looked up from where the voice came from and saw his boyfriend looking very worried as he held a cup of steaming hot tea on his hand. His dark brown eyes followed Alec as the Shadowhunter carefully kneeled in front of him, placing the cup on top of the coffee table. The position reminded him again of their earlier conversation, and as he watched him intently, Alec reached out and brushed away a few tears that fell down on his cheek. Magnus was slightly shocked—he didn’t even realized that he was crying.
“Hey,” Alec muttered softly as he continued to caress his cheek. “I’m here.”
Magnus closed his eyes as he took a deep breath, and opened them up again a moment later to see Alec still staring at him with the same gentle concern in those hazel eyes. A little relieved smile creeped through his lips as he faintly replied, “I know, Alexander.”
With a deep sigh, Alec leaned in and placed a quick kiss on Magnus’s forehead before settling next to him on the sofa. For the rest of the hour, they both sat in silence as Magnus took the time to sip his tea slowly, cherishing the warm heat flowing down his throat in a soothing manner. As he did that, Alec sat patiently beside him, and he rubbed circles around Magnus's back to ease his slightly tensed body.
When he finished drinking all of the tea, he eventually found himself resting his head on Alec’s lap, with the rest of his body occupying most of the sofa. He breathed out a sigh of relief when he heard Alec humming a soft tune to his ear. The sound of Alec’s voice, low and gentle, was enough to completely calm his nerves, and he closed his eyes when his boyfriend ran a hand through his already messy hair in a reassuring way.
“Thank you, Alexander.” he whispered so quietly that Alec almost didn’t catch it.
Alec responded with a low “Go to sleep, Magnus. I’ll be here when you wake up” on his ear, then proceeded to hum a different song that Magnus recognized as an old lullaby. As he focused on the melody, he realized how tired he was and he found himself slowly drifting off to unconsciousness.
Before sleep totally consumed him, the last thing he remembered was Alec whispering “I love you so much” and the soft touch of his lips on his cheek.

summary: magnus and alec are tired of waking up without each other. they just miss each another. and all alec has is this loft key that magnus gave him.
read it on AO3 !
Alec couldn’t remember what it was like not waking up alone. He hadn’t slept by himself since he started dating Magnus, and now it’s been too long and way too many days. Every morning he rolls over in his bed at the Institute, hoping that everything that had happened four days ago was just a dream, but just like every other morning, he’s met with the cold sheets on the side of the bed where Magnus should be. And he can’t get up, like he physically cannot pull himself out of bed because he doesn’t have his beautiful boyfriend to wake up to, he doesn’t wake up to Magnus teasing him every morning. It makes his heart hurt, it aches inside of his chest, because all he can think about is the countless mornings that they’ve shared. Where they would both wake up, smiles on their faces and teasing words being thrown at one another.
Now all he has is Jace knocking at his door, telling him for the fourth morning in a row that he just has to get out of bed. He knows he has duties, he knows he’s the head of the institute, and he can’t abandon any of his duties just because he’s heartbroken. But it still hurts to get out of bed and pick up the clothes that Isabelle had laid out for him the night before. She had chosen clothes that Magnus loved though; there was the shirt that Magnus always complimented him on, the jeans he wore the night of their first date, the same silly shoes he wears 24/7 that Magnus teases him about all the time. He’s glad though, he’s glad that Isabelle knew exactly what to pick out for him. He needed to feel close to Magnus, now more than ever, and having the clothes that reminded him of Magnus was helping him.
The loft key is the only thing that actually belonged to Magnus before it was his though, and every morning since that night, he had picked it up off of his bedside table and put it into his front pocket. The key, the simple, tiny, golden key, got him through his days. It was the only thing that kept him sane.
It’s been four days now, since they’ve slept in the same bed. It’s been getting harder and harder. The first day was definitely the hardest, for both of them, but the other days were just painful to endure.
Every morning Magnus had to drag himself out of bed, use his magic to apply his usual makeup, but he was applying much more to disguise the bags underneath his eyes. He hadn’t slept but maybe four hours altogether in the past four days. He never knew that giving his heart to someone else would end up with him, the High Warlock of Brooklyn, not being able to function properly. He couldn’t sleep, or eat, or breathe. He drank, a lot. He spent the majority of his days drinking. It hurt his heart in his chest to think of Alec, he couldn’t even imagine how he was doing. He didn’t want to. He didn’t have any desire to see the hurt that he had brought upon the love of his life. He doesn’t want to imagine how Alec was doing now, without him. He knew Alec was upset, he had seen it in the tears that welled up in his eyes whenever he stepped into the elevator four days ago. He had caused Alec to cry. Alec; the strong, stoic man who never shed a tear. He was the reason that Alec was hurting, and that broke his heart into a million pieces.
He never wanted to see Alec like this. He had never wanted to cause him any pain; he never wanted to see Alec in pain. He tried to block the image out of his mind, but every time he tried to sleep, whenever he closed his eyes, he saw the same image of Alec looking like he was about to cry.
Magnus tried to distract himself, he looked at pictures in his phone of the Shadowhunter. Smiling Alec, grumpy Alec, nothing that resembled sadness in any way. But it didn’t work, and he felt a tear fall from his eye. “I’m so sorry.”
Alec just couldn’t wrap his head around the whole thing. He hadn’t done anything wrong, at least he didn’t think so. Magnus has said that he loved him, so many times, but Magnus left. While he understood the words Magnus had said to him that night, he didn’t understand why Magnus had told him that he loved him if he was just going to leave.
He hadn’t seen Magnus, he hadn’t spoken to Magnus, and all he had was that one loft key and the pictures of Magnus in his phone. The pictures he had taken of Magnus smiling made his lips quirk up a bit into a small smile, the grumpy pictures of Magnus made his giggle despite the tears streaming down his face. He loves Magnus. He loves him with his whole being, his heart and soul.
And even though Magnus had walked away, Alec knew that he would love the man forever, even if Magnus decided not to come back to him. He would love Magnus with his whole heart as long as he lived, no matter what. He knew that Magnus would love him in the same way though, he trusted the man when those three words came from his mouth whenever they were together. But it still hurt. They haven’t talked, they haven’t seen each other. He can tell that Jace and Izzy try not to mention Magnus around him. Alec looked like he he would break at any moment, but he was trying so hard not to. He’s the head of the Institute. He had to be strong. He has to fight.
Nobody called him Alexander, and when anyone did, he pushed back tears and let out a desperate “Don’t. Don’t call me that.” Only one person could call him by his full first name, and that one person wasn’t around. He only wanted Magnus to call him by that name, so when anyone else did, he gripped the loft key a little bit tighter in his fist, so tight that he was afraid the key might break. He tried holding himself together, he really did. He was a leader. He couldn’t let anyone see him like this. Only Magnus has seen him so broken before, not his siblings, nor his parents. Only Magnus. Magnus has the capability to make Alec feel good and happy, but right now he feels like shit. Trying to get his work done. He trains, harder and harder as each day passes by, he’s also more hard on himself. “If I hadn’t lied to Magnus, he’d still be here with me,” another punch to his gut, “Maybe none of this would have happened if I had been honest.” He hits the punching bag harder and harder until his knuckles are bleeding and sweat is gathering in bead s on his forehead.
When he’s tired of beathing himself up, physically and emotionally, he says goodnight to Izzy, Clary, and Jace. And he goes back to his cold, empty bed.
He doesn’t like it here anymore. He called the Institute his home for more than twenty years, but in the past few months, home had become something different, it held a different meaning. Home had become a place so vibrant and colorful, a place that was always changing, looking slightly different whenever he came back from work. Home had soft, smooth, black hair, that constantly had different colored streaks in it. Home had eyes that were golden, flecked with soft yellow spots, but home sometimes would glamour the cat eyes away, replacing them with eyes dark enough to be black. Home wore colorful clothes, and leather pants, and had so many different outfits in his closet. Home’s voice sounded like honey whenever he spoke, and when home laughed, the sound lit up Alec’s entire life. Home smelled like sandalwood. Home was Magnus, Magnus held Alec’s heart and made Alec feel safer than he’d ever felt inside the walls of the Institute. And he missed home, he missed his boyfriend holding him tight in his arms. He missed kissing Magnus’ forehead whenever he came home from a long day at the institute. He missed the smell of Magnus, he missed the soft, silk sheets that Magnus was constantly changing. He even missed the pile of clutter in the corner of Magnus’ room. He didn’t mind that Magnus was a mess sometimes, he loves him for it. He would love Magnus no matter what.
One day, Alec has had enough of this. He can’t do it anymore, he can’t. He feels like he’s going crazy. Without thinking, he calls up Magnus and the phone rings, and rings, and rings. Nobody picks up. He starts to leave voice messages.
“Magnus please. I want to talk to you. I miss you so much. I can’t do this anymore. Please. What happened to “I’m all for effort”?”
He leaves even more messages as the days without Magnus pass by, slowly.
“Magnus, you said not to push you away when things get crazy, but you’re pushing me away and I can’t deal with it anymore. I can’t sleep, I can’t eat, I-“
His voice fell quiet for a moment before he spoke up again, his voice soft, “I miss you. I can’t live without you. I love-“ Beep.
The phone beeped in his ear, signaling the message was cut short. He missed Magnus. He loved him. And this was probably the twentieth message he had sent.
Magnus hears the messages that Alec is sending him, he listens to them on repeat. He cries, and he drinks, and he cries even more. He has his people to protect, what he has done was for everyone’s well-being, but he hurt Alec in the process. He should talk to Alec, he really should. So he takes a deep breath, typing out the message that he had been wanting to send for days, but he takes a moment to send it, nervous of the outcome. He finally sends it, after reading over it nearly thirty times. Meet me at the loft. After he sends it, he takes a deep breath. He needs to explain. It might end up in them fighting or arguing, but he needs to talk to Alec, he needs to hear his voice.
Alec feels his phone buzz against his thigh and he wastes no time in pulling it out of his front pocket. Every time he had felt his phone buzz in the past few days, he had been eager to see if it was Magnus. This time it was. He read over Magnus’ text too many times to count, and within the next two minutes, he had put Jace in charge and was headed for the loft.
He didn’t know what he was going to say, or what Magnus would say, but all he knew was that Magnus wanted to see him. He definitely wasn’t going to turn that request down. Alec literally ran to the loft, not walked, but ran. All that he was thinking about was Magnus, Magnus is on his fucking mind, and when he gets close to Magnus’ loft, he stands and looks at the building for a few moments before walking in. “Okay Alec, you can do it. Go in.” And he does. He walks through the doors to the building and finds himself in front of Magnus’ door, his hand heavy when he knocks.
Magnus opens the door. When he does, Alec takes a good look at him and he feels sad. He never wanted Magnus to feel sad, and he can see the bags under his eyes. He can tell that the man in front of him hasn’t slept. Without thinking, he reaches his arms out and pulls Magnus in for a hug, a big crushing hug. “I missed you so much.”
After Magnus had opened the door, he took a good, long look at Alec. The Shadowhunter looked exhausted, his hair was a mess, he looked as if he hadn’t slept in days, and Magnus could relate to that. He hadn’t realized how much he depended on Alec to sleep at night. But all his thoughts were thrown out the window when Alec wrapped his arms around him in a hug, a big hug that could literally squeeze the life out of Magnus, but he felt safe, he felt at home. He wrapped both of his arms around Alec, his head resting on the taller man’s shoulder, finally feeling at ease for the first time in days. He let out a few tears because, god, he missed his boyfriend. He missed holding him and breathing in the scent of him. He missed feeling safe and loved.
Alec pulled back and just looked into Magnus’ eyes. They weren’t glamoured, and damn, he looked so fucking beautiful. “I need to explain. I’m so fucking sorry for lying to you. It’s my fault that this happened. If I didn’t lie then this wouldn’t have happened. Magnus, I’m so fucking sorry. It’s been so tough without you and-“ Alec can’t even talk anymore, he needs to kiss him. So that’s what he does. He pushes Magnus up against the wall, so desperate to finally touch his boyfriend again, and he kisses him with all he has. His kiss is saying everything he can’t put into words, “I’m so fucking sorry.” “I love you so much.” “Please, let’s work this out.”
Magnus felt horrible because his beautiful Alexander was beating himself up for all of this, and while Alec shouldn’t have lied, this wasn’t Alec’s fault. He just listened to Alec speaking and he shook his head, muttering under his breath, “You stupid Nephilim.” And when Alec pushed his back against the wall, he wasn’t complaining. He missed Alec, he missed Alec’s kisses and his lips and his soft breath in between kisses. So when Alec pushed his lips against his own, he kissed the Shadowhunter back with everything he had. He missed everything about the man in front of him, and he didn’t realize how much he actually couldn’t live without him until he was there in front of him, and he realized then that he never wanted to spend another day without Alec by his side.
Alec pulled back from the kiss and looked at Magnus, lifting his chin up, and cupping his cheeks. “Let’s work this out okay? I can’t do this without you Magnus, I love you so much. I’m all for effort.” Alec gave Magnus a smile and gave him one last peck on the lips.
ahh i'm so glad to hear you're writing! what about malec + breakfast??
i hope you like this! also thanks to @peaceandcows for editing this!
Light comes through the curtains of Magnus’ bedroom and Magnus let's out a groan. This bed is so comfortable he doesn't want to open his eyes and wake up; he's good where he is. Magnus opens his eyes after a few seconds and looks to his right and his brows furrows. Where is Alec? Magnus thinks.
He pouts a little, did Alec leave to go to the institute already? It’s only 6 in the morning. Magnus snaps his fingers and his phone pops up in his hand. He didn't get a text from Alec saying that he was in the institute; Alec would usually text if he was.
After pouting a little more, Magnus smelled food, and he smiles to himself. Okay, Alec is in the kitchen probably making breakfast.
“Well, I shouldn't keep my boyfriend waiting,” Magnus says to himself, still smiling.
Magnus got off the bed, snapped a robe on and walked to the kitchen. The food smelling better and better as he walked closer.
Magnus sees his boyfriend and he smiles even wider. Damn his boyfriend is beautiful, messy hair, no shirt on. It was great.
Magnus walks behind Alec, and hugs him from behind. “What a nice sight to see first thing in the morning,” Magnus mumbled and kisses Alec’s bare back and he felt Alec shiver a little bit.
Alec turns around and put his hands on Magnus’ waist. “Morning,” Alec says in a deep voice and bends down to kiss Magnus on the lips.
Magnus smiles and put his hands on Alec’s neck, kissing him back and smiling into the kiss.
“Very good morning indeed,” Magnus chuckles, “Making breakfast, I see?”
Alec turns around and Magnus saw two plates and both of them had eggs, fruits and bacon.
“Yeah, I’m just waiting till the toast comes out and breakfast will be served,” Alec replies, giving Magnus a cheeky smile and rubbing his thumb on Magnus’ waist.
“Sounds good, Alexander, but you know I have Magic, and I could conjure up some mean breakfast,” Magnus says teasingly, letting go of Alec’s hold and walking to the two plates with food in them.
“Yeah, but I don't want you to use magic, I wanted to do something special this morning,” Alec says as he walked towards Magnus and gives him a kiss on the forehead; Magnus smiles.
“Mmm, you know I love you, right?” Magnus asks, looking into Alec’s hazel eyes, getting lost in them.
A ping was heard from the toaster and Alec walked away from Magnus to get the toast; he put some butter on them and took the two plates and two cups of coffee and took them to the table, setting them down.
After doing that, Alec turns around and gave a smile towards Magnus, “I do, and I love you too and so much more.” Alec replies, taking Magnus’ hand and pulling him closer and looking into his eyes; they were unglamoured and Alec thought they were so beautiful.
“Let’s eat, I'm starving,” Magnus smirked as he let go of Alec and sat down on the chair, motioning Alec to sit beside him.
Alec rolls his eyes and sits beside Magnus.
Magnus smiled and gave a quick peck on Alec’s lips, quickly taking Alec’s piece of bacon.
“Hey! I saw that, you already have bacon!” Alec exclaimed, but he wasn't mad. He was looking at Magnus with complete adoration.
“Whoops,” Magnus gave a smirk and shrugged, still continuing to eat his bacon.
Alec shook his head and rolled his eyes, digging in into his breakfast, keeping Magnus close to his side.
I dedicate this short fic to my our loft in brooklyn family. Thank you for the never-ending headcanons, both angst and fluff, that are sooo amazing and wonderful and emotional. The New York Institute was on high alert as the swarm of demons and other creatures from hell caused devastation and despair right outside of the holy walls of the old church. The once-imminent war ultimately broke out a few hours before, and the casualties from both sides were rising as Shadowhunters and Downworlders finally put aside their differences to defend their world from being taken over. The main holding area of the Institute was crowded, with every single race—nephilim, warlocks, seelies, vampires, and werewolves—gearing themselves up as they waited for the next moment to strike. It was a rare sight to see the tension between these diverse group of people to die down, to see each and every one interact and give one another strength and comfort through this dark time. As his eyes scanned around the room, Alec wondered how things would’ve been if all of them had been a united front a lot sooner.
As he continued to scan through all this chaos, his alliance rune was pulling him towards the direction of the other side of the room. His hazel eyes looked around and found a familiar pair—he could recognize those dark brown eyes anywhere—and he let out a sigh of relief. He struggled his way through the crowd as a few swords and armors were bumping onto him, but his eyes never left his as he walked closer and closer. He noticed that Magnus was also walking towards him, and he was also fighting through the people in the way between them.
When they finally met near the entrance, they somehow found enough room for them to share a moment. Both of them stood quietly, sharing a worried smile as they took in every detail of each other as much as they can. It took a while, but Magnus eventually broke the stillness when he stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Alec’s waist. Alec, in turn, wrapped his arms around the love of his life and buried his face at the space between Magnus’s neck and shoulders. The pair of lovers clung to each other tightly, and if both of them had their way, they would never want to let each other go. They knew all too well that they eventually have to, but they tried to push those thoughts back as they try to find peace in each other’s arms.
A moment later, Magnus slightly pulled back and stared at Alec with a worried look on his face. Their faces were mere inches away from each other, and Alec could feel Magnus’s warm breath as the High Warlock of Brooklyn whispered, “I could feel the wards weakening around the whole building. It won’t hold for much longer.”
Alec sighed, closed his eyes, and nodded. “I know. They’re getting closer.”
Magnus reached out and placed his hand at the side of Alec’s neck, and his thumb lightly caressed the deflect rune that decorated most of that side. Alec held onto Magnus’s wrist and placed a kiss on the rune that he drew there a few hours ago. With a strong urge to be closer, he leaned in and rested his forehead against Magnus’s, and both of them let out a heavy breath as they listened to their hearts beating in time with each other.
Alec leaned back to place a lingering kiss on his boyfriend’s forehead as he murmured, “We should probably go and take our positions.”
Magnus nodded in agreement, and both of them slowly unwrapped themselves from each other’s arms. As Alec was about to turn and walk back to the middle platform of the room, Magnus remembered something important and he immediately grabbed hold of his boyfriend’s arm. The Head of the New York Institute turn back to his lover with a confused and worried look on his face, but Magnus slid his hand to hold Alec's as his other hand reached at the pocket of his trousers.
“I want you to have this,” he said as he placed a small charm on Alec’s hand and closed it tightly with both of his own. He lightly shook his head as a small smile appeared on his lips, “I can’t believe I almost forgot to give it to you.”
Alec looked down and placed his other hand on top of Magnus’s, who dropped his other hand so that his boyfriend could take a look at what he got for him. The little charm was a small rectangular one, with a vibrant color of orange on it’s body and a small white rope at the top of it. It was decorated with a few writings on it, and it made Alec feel a wave of emotions because it was a very familiar amulet. He realized that it was the omamori, the very same one that he bought Magnus when they went on date in Tokyo.
“Why are you giving this back to me?” he asked quietly, a little crease formed between his eyebrows. “This is for you, Magnus. I want you to have it.”
Magnus flashed him a smile, and he shook his head as he reached his other hand in the inside pocket of his jacket. When he got what he wanted, he placed his hand beside Alec’s, and he presented an identical omamori charm that looked exactly as the one Alec is currently holding.
“A few days ago, I went back to Tokyo to work with an old client,” Magnus began, looking directly at Alec with a gentle look in his eyes. “After I was done, I was walking through the same street we went through during our date, and I saw an old shop at the corner that sold a lot of Japanese charms. It instantly reminded me of you, and how you somehow managed to sneak out and buy me this omamori while I wasn’t looking.”
Alec couldn’t speak, so Magnus chuckled, and continued, “I decided to buy you one, and I was supposed to give it to you sooner, but a lot of shit happened recently and I never got the chance. But I guess it’s okay, since you need it now, more than ever.”
Alec looked down and studied both of their hands, but Magnus lifted his free hand to tilt his head back up to look at him. Magnus leaned it closer and rested his palm lightly on Alec’s cheek as he whispered, “Alexander, I’m not the only one who should have luck and protection. I want you to have those, too.”
Alec looked down as a few tears formed around his eyes. He was speechless, but he clutched on to his own omamori tightly as he looked back up to Magnus. He didn't say anything, but Magnus understood Alec so much that he knew that his boyfriend loved. Alec leaned in and placed his lips against Magnus’s in a quick but sweet kiss, and he breathed out a low “Thank you” as he rested his forehead against his boyfriend’s own.
Magnus kissed the tip of his nose, then he leaned away as he helped Alec placed the omamori in the pocket of his lucky denim shirt, just near his heart. Once it was there, Magnus patted it in a fond way, to which Alec smiled lovingly.
“When all of this is over, we should definitely go back to Tokyo.”
Magnus chuckled, and nodded eagerly. “Yes, we should definitely go back.”
Both of them shared a quiet laugh, but they were promptly interrupted when Magnus felt a few powerful blows around the last remaining defensive wards around the Institute. Alec also felt them through the rune he shared with the High Warlock, and both of them looked at each other in concern. Magnus turned around and caught sight of a few of his warlock friends and acquaintances, who also felt the strong disturbance around the building.
“They’re coming.” Magnus announced, his tone immediately turned serious as he looked back towards Alec. “The wards are going to fall down at any moment.”
Alec nodded, and he grabbed Magnus’s hand as he pulled his boyfriend with him towards the platform at the middle of the room. They bumped through a few of their family, friends, and allies on the way, and most of them quickly understood that the time has come to fight.
Their enemies are already at their door, knocking on it aggressively. Those demons are eager to grab hold and annihilate any soul they could dragged down with them, and they are hungry for their flesh and thirsty for their blood.
“It’s happening,” Magnus announced as he stepped on the platform with Alec, staring at the crowd before them. Everybody in the room grew silent, and they all listened as Magnus added, “They’re coming in.”
“Everyone, take your positions,” Alec called out loudly. He took out his stele and fully-activated the rune that connected him with Magnus, and everyone watched as the alliance rune glowed a mixture of fiery red and a cold blue hue on their marked skin. With a quick movement using his stele, Alec summoned his bow and arrows on his hands, and he took a deep breath as he held them in a relaxed yet prepared position.
The rest of the nephilim collectively activated their alliance runes, and every rune in the room glowed as each souls of both Shadowhunters and Downworlders united in a harmonious display of strength and unity. When the short ceremony was done, the large group hurriedly split up around the halls and floors of the building. Each members of the diverse group had prepared themselves with their choice of weapons: the vampires showed their lethal fangs out; the seelies used their connection with nature to manipulate their surroundings while also battling with their spears; the pack transformed into their werewolf form and roamed around with their allies; the warlocks cast defensive spells around their groups and are also ready for any offensive spells needed; and the nephilim expertly leads their respective groups around the halls and floors, while also being ready to strike anything with their seraph blades.
Alec looked around at the remaining group left, which consists of his family and friends. He stared at each of their faces as he followed Magnus down the platform.
“I guess this is it, then,” Magnus muttered solemnly, a rush of magic already pulsing through his veins. His hands twitched slightly, and a few sparks of magic formed around them, all the way to his wrist.
Alec turned to look at his man, the love of his life, and the way he stood there waiting as he subtly played around with his magic. Looking at him made Alec more confident, knowing that he’ll be able to defend and fight for the Shadow World and its people with the man he loves by his side.
“Magnus?”
“Yes, Alexander?”
“I love you,” Alec said, staring at Magnus with such conviction and certainty. At those words, the rune on both of their respective wrist started to glow more brightly, and both of them could’ve sworn that the omamori in their pockets somehow felt a little bit heavier than before.
Magnus stared at him with a look full of love and assurance. He smiled, and the magic surrounding his arm quickly vanished as he reached out and took Alec’s hand on his own. “I love you, too.”
Both of them gripped tightly on their intertwined hands before they felt the last strike outside the wall, and the Institute’s wards collapsing around them. Immediately after, the swarm of demons came rushing in through every opening possible, and the sound of metal swishing through demonic beings and spirits shrieking as they disintegrated filled the whole room.
As Alec aimed his arrow at an approaching demon, he watched as his arrow flew above with a flash of red magic circling around it in lightning speed. The impact of it instantly killed the demon, and at least two surrounding others behind it.
He turned around to see Magnus smirking at him from a distance, with his amber cat eyes burning brightly among the darkness.
With a slight shook of his head, Alec’s focus went back to the battle at hand. Magnus also shifted his stance as an incoming demon made its way to him. Both of them stood firmly on their positions; both of them feeling the runes working as they shared their energy, skills, and abilities with one another.
But what surprised them was the feeling of the omamori near their hearts, connecting their souls as they fight through the war raging around them.
