Day 0 | Day 1
Love immortalized in the stars
Tears, so many tears in which she could have drowned. "I'm happy for you." Fake joy spread across her face. That was what she could remember when the young Prince Fae asked her how she felt when she learned that her best friend was marrying the man she loved, the father of the boy in front of her. The boy had the same eyes and the same elegant features as his father, and every day he reminded her that his father was something she would never be able to give him: his love. She was the nanny of the young prince, who saw her almost as his own mother. She put him to bed, cared for him when he was sick, and read him bedtime stories. But something she couldn't give him was maternal love; that was never her destiny. "You know, my prince," she began thoughtfully, "I was so happy for your mother," she lied. "Really? But your eyes look so sad!" Nothing escaped the little boy when it came to his nanny. Only the grief had persisted all these years. The young woman remembered vividly what she had gone through.
Lilia was the first to see it: the body of a young woman hanging from the tree, swinging slowly back and forth. The rope tied around her neck, knotted to the branch at the other end, made the branch creak. His eyes widened in horror as he saw the scene before him. "(Name)?" he barely managed to say. Long-gone tears still clung to her cheeks, and...blood. Blood slowly trickled down her neck, where the rope had cut into the flesh, glistening in the moonlight. Lilia acted swiftly, pulling her from the life-threatening situation. Her breathing was almost imperceptible as he healed her. In his years, he hadn't experienced such fear, but his pulse slowed as her breathing became more even. He knew what it was and why she had done it. He had watched as her joy had slowly faded from her eyes since that day, and it worried him to see her like this. He had admired how she was so enthusiastic about the world she had suddenly found herself in and how she had made so many new friends, even outside of it. Everything had been so wonderful until her best friend, delivered the news that she was getting married to Malleus Draconia. She had witnessed Malleus's overblood attack and rescued him. The two of them had been so close. Their connection was perfect; they were meant for each other. Malleus had tried to fight the arranged marriage, but there was no way around it, no escape. And so Lilia had to watch her crumble under the weight of it, consumed by eternal grief.
Malleus watched her, the woman who held his heart in her hands. He carefully observed her every move, and when he was with his fiancée, he sent Lilia, Silver, or Sebek to watch her. Malleus had to watch as her heart shattered into pieces, pieces that couldn't be repaired...or could they? In moments when they were completely alone, when his fiancée couldn't walk in at any moment, other students couldn't see them, or teachers couldn't catch them, he gently kissed away her tears, his lips carefully touching her skin, afraid that the moment he touched her, she would break in his hands. Her hands clung to the fabric of his uniform, her tears hot and full of despair. "Please don't leave me alone," she whimpered softly. Malleus broke at the sight, her body trembling with grief, and as she felt his lips on hers, a gentle sleep slowly settled over her. Before she drifted into the land of dreams where everything was alright, she clearly heard Malleus's words: "I will always love you, no matter what comes between us. Our love will be immortalized in the stars." Malleus pulled her body back into bed in the Ramshakle. The spell would last until the next morning, in the hope that the dreams it bestowed upon her would soothe her.
From that day on, she noticed the growing distance between herself, Malleus, and her best friend. Grim was already worried when he saw her: dark circles under her eyes, thinning, and attending classes less frequently. The teachers practically had to force her to come or send other students. She was at the end of her rope, and when the wedding day arrived, she completely broke inside. He didn't even look at her; his eyes were fixed on the woman in the wedding dress, a worthy bride for Malleus Draconia. It seemed as if her former best friend had become a tyrant. She allowed her to work as a maid and as the future nanny to Malleus's heir. She had to attend to the young queen's pregnancy and help raise the young prince. And yet, something was about to change. As she cradled the young prince in his sleep, an arm wrapped around her waist, and soft lips brushed her neck as he inhaled her scent—Malleus. "Our love will be immortalized in the stars," he murmured softly into the back of her neck, and when she looked out the window, a new constellation in the shape of a heart appeared in the night sky. As she turned to face him, he had vanished. With a soft sigh, she tucked the sleeping prince into bed, but she felt the kiss until the next morning. Such visits became more frequent; it was like a forbidden fruit they both desired. What she didn't see beneath all the sorrow was the hatred Malleus felt for his wife.
Malleus hated her so much. Why did someone so deceitful have to be his wife and the mother of his son? His wife knew that (Name) belonged to him; she feigned friendship only to get close to him, and ultimately, to be able to marry him. He felt only resentment. And when he saw (Name)? His heart filled with pain. He wanted her; he always imagined her when he was intimate with his wife. He imagined how she would sound, how her body would bring his child into the world, how she would give the child maternal love. All she needed to do was hold his son, and it cost him everything he had to resist ensnaring her and fathering another child. And his longing for her wound deep within his soul; after all, it was one of his instincts as a dragon to possess what he desired most. And he showed it without others suspecting: jewels from his private chamber appeared on her table, flowers in her favorite colors were brought to her, and sadly, for leisure time. When Malleus saw her in a dress he had bought for her, combined with one or more pieces of jewelry that belonged to him, it was his grin that showed that you belonged to him. You just didn't seem to notice, but that was okay. Soon he would show you how much he loved you. No matter what came between you, your love would always remain the best.
"Na na!" The young prince's voice, calling her nickname, snapped her out of her thoughts. She smiled gently, a warm and genuine smile that, despite the circumstances, was meant only for him. She knelt down and lifted him into her arms. "It's okay to be sad, you know? Tears are proof that you can still feel." The young prince chuckled softly, but when he saw the tears rolling down her cheeks, he gently pressed his cheek against hers, careful not to poke her with his horns. "I love you, I wish you were my mommy," he whispered. His words touched her heart so deeply that she sat with him in her arms in front of the warm fireplace, weeping softly as the young prince, still in her arms, gazed toward the door.
Malleus stood in the doorway, a smile on his lips as he approached. A kiss on her lips and a gentle touch on her cheek, and she drifted into a peaceful sleep. Malleus had his son beside him as he carried her body to a bedroom, a room just for her, a room where he could love her as he wished. "Will Mommy be all right?" asked the young prince, walking beside his father. "Of course, she's having a very pleasant dream now."
