alexa play self control by frank ocean this movie was different than i thought it was in many different ways! i wish it was longer :( but i do know that the length of the movie had to do with the sundance film festival reqs and i'm so happy it won and is playing internationally in theatres! the concept of this movie is so unique and i love how it was portrayed. i feel like the horror aspect of this movie was delivered in a more psychological than gory way and that i definitely appreciate as someone who dislikes gore. i love the pacing of this film and how the horror builds after the romance begins. having pre-established relations between the characters def gives the audience an attachment to the characters both alone and together, making us feel more invested in scenes with the entity. watching this in the theatre with my best friend had us guessing whether or not we were seeing human or entity ryan (he almost had me fooled at that screen door).

one of my favorite things about this movie is the lack of overexplanation. it feels like we are given just enough information about the characters and context in certain scenes for us to understand both the motives of the characters as well as the way the director may have wanted the audience to interpret the scene. a good example of this is the scene where naim puts his hand on the entity's cheek as it is about to attack him. while it is obvious that naim did this as a last resort of some sort, the reason why he took this action and why it worked is almost entirely up to interpretation of the viewer. personally i think that the love that naim felt for ryan was so strong in the face of that moment that it made the entity powerless, as its purpose was actively being countered.

i also love naim's character, he was very intelligent and had good survival skill but still had moments where he listened to his heart over his head, i feel like i understand him very well. as much as i would love to see the entity and certain parts of the movie through ryan's pov, ultimately i think seeing it through naim's was far more powerful for a variety of reasons. the fact that naim is presumed to have no experience with loving or having intimate experience with a boy, unlike ryan, is definitely a big one. i feel like the entire hunter subplot is very representative of the themes of internalized homophobia and self hate lightly present throughout the movie. hunter and ryan throwing rocks at each other before they kissed, for me, felt like an indicator that they subconsciously thought their actions were wrong due to their environment. it was like they were punishing each other because of what they were + the fact that they weren't able to erase that guilt or part of themselves. with naim, ryan experienced tender love and a connection that didn't make him feel guilty or hurt as a consequence. hence why his entity was naim and not hunter.

the fact that this movie had a happy ending really stuck with me as well, because so frequently queer stories will end in some sort of tragedy. them escaping the small town is also symbolic of them accepting themselves and learning to adjust to change with the realization of who they truly were. #ryanaimforeva

hello i just finished water lilies 2007 so here is my peanemis (peak cinema analysis) <— yes this term was stolen from an instagram reel

oh my god okay i have some things to say about this movie. i was put on by the sofia edit on youtube only to realize the actual movie is almost entirely different from the vibe of the edit. essentially marie is pining after floriane, but floriane doesn’t see marie the same way she does. not exactly. the perception each girl has of their relationship is different: floriane uses marie, to practice sex, kissing, and as an outlet to talk about her feelings and problems currently happening in her life, and marie wants floriane to want her and her only, but she consistently watches floriane choose francois or other random guys over her and chase them simply because it’s all she knows.

on the other hand, anne, marie’s percieved best friend, is experiencing a similar situation with francois, the same guy floriane is often with or “dating”. she wants him to pay attention to her, specifically after an occurrence of him seeing her naked in the changing rooms. she uses many different tactics in attempt to get his attention, and marie is visibly tired of her chasing after francois so severely (likely because she is in a situation where she is doing the exact same thing and knows that it isn’t helping her either, doesn’t want to deal with someone who is acting so similar to her current self). when anne does get francois’s attention, it is purely sexual, as he comes over to her house only to touch her body and have sex with her, without kissing or even speaking to her during the matter. i presume he left immediately after. anne boasts about this to marie and the story connects once we find out the only reason francois came to anne was because floriane didn’t want to sleep with him.

i have seen very mixed reviews about the end of the film, however i think it just requires a lot of media literacy skill. after marie kisses floriane, likely in attempt to get her to want marie once again, she says “now how difficult was that?” and returns to be with guys at the party. marie realizes that floriane being perceived as a “slag” is for a variety of different reasons, one of which being the fact that she thrives off of male attention despite the fact that she likes females as well (? personally i think she’s lesbian w/ comphet) and her holding such a role in her life is hurting her overall. anne has a similar realization with francois, that he has no interest in wanting to know her or talk to her, and is only giving her attention for his own sexual pleasure. she goes to kiss him, but spits in his mouth instead and leaves him alone in an empty room they were going to hook up in.

marie and anne’s friendship is the main topic of the ending of the movie. they both jump in the pool fully clothed and float together, showing them being content in their situations and their accompaniment with each other — as they are able to understand each other’s problems and had just recently solved their individual problems by breaking things off with people who were harming or using them: marie emotionally, and anne physically.

*** also one detail i do want to highlight is the fact that anne was very descriptive with her relationship and doings with francois, but marie was very secretive with floriane, not only hiding the fact that she was a girl, but being private about all of the things they did together and the excessive time they spent in each other’s company + how and why it hurt. she simply stated that she liked someone to anne, and that is the only thing she mentions to outside people about their relationship throughout the movie. i think this is realistic in the way it captures the fear queer people experience, with having to hide our relationships in fear of how we’ll be perceived by others. this also applies to floriane in being afraid to embrace her feelings for marie in a healthy way, even when they are alone!
