Hey! I loved your point about how much racism there was sadly seen in the TVD Universe. When it first aired in 2009, I don’t think I noticed much because I just saw an amazing Supernatural Series that was the best thing out there since Twilight. It had a very relatable, girl next door feel that I loved. But as time passed and things started coming out, I realized how many red flags there were from the very beginning. Like the actress that played Bonnie was forced to straighten her hair throughout the show. The Salvatore family being plantation owners, Damon being a confederate soldier, and the Originals having black “servants” in the 1800s flashbacks. And all the main characters were white, with only a few black ones scattered in, most of which were quickly killed off. And there were never any main characters that were Asian, Middle Eastern, Latino, Polynesian or any other race. If TVD ever gets redone, as so many old shows are these days, I really hope they do a more inclusive cast with more diverse characters and deep backstories and families. Even though I think characters like the Salvatores and the Originals would most likely have to remain all white, I hope other characters are different ethnicity and that it plays into their development as well. Thanks for addressing this!
I'm not really a fan of the whole remake trend at the minute, because stuff just does not need to be remade, not unless the artist has something new to say. Which 9/10 times, they don't. They're just remaking the original scene for scene and it's just so clearly a money grabbing scheme most of the time. I think as well, we shouldn't be falling into this trap of deliberately re-casting white characters with ethnic minorities for the sake of being inclusive. If the actor/actress was better than any white actor/actress that auditioned and that's why they got the job? Perfect. And if the show's character was then changed and altered to more fit them? Fucking BRILLIANT. That's how it should be, and it's embaressing that it still might not happening that way all the time in this day and age. But just recasting characters for the sake of inclusivity?
Nah, man, that's lazy and half-hearted. More diverse stories and characters need be written for diverse people, otherwise you're just writing more white characters, sticking an inclusivity sticker on them because you cast some ethinic minority to play them, and calling it a day.
