Love triangle?? 😤✋ Polycule!! 😌✌️💗
might color later :>
If I may speak a little more about Pearl/Rose/Greg for a bit:
- Rose had a lot of love to give. Of course she could have poured it all into one romantic partner, but why not share it with two of the most wonderful people in her life?
- Her relationship with Greg was like discovering what music sounds like for the first time all over again. It was an endless adventure of new experiences, and seeing Earth through a human’s eye. It was holding hands and eating fast food and finally feeling like she was a part of something genuinely amazing. She could forget everything she had done and been through and listened to him play guitar on a planet where water falls from the sky and no two things were ever the same. Everything was okay when she was with him, if only just for a moment.
- Her relationship with Pearl was the long withstanding love of a married couple. Not without their rough patches, but with the power to overcome them and to stay together no matter the hardships of war or the lack thereof. While they may have not shared everything with eachother, they did share many secrets. They were entwined together like the vines of a rosebush, through all that they had been through by eachother’s side. Pearl was so dedicated to her and not afraid to show it, and how charming that must have been, especially at a time when Rose felt like no one else in the universe could love her.
And that’s a part of what makes Pearl and Greg’s friendship in her absence so beautiful. Their experiences with Rose were so different; while Pearl could go on about how flawless she was on the battlefield, Greg could go on about how much she laughed at hot dog jokes.
Rose isn’t around anymore -- not entirely -- but they learn something new about her everyday when they talk with one another.
Rose is Bisexual, Pearl is Asexual, Greg is Agender, and they’re in a relationship!

Do you think Rose really chose greg over Pearl?
That’s ... a strong question. It depends on what you mean by ‘chose’.
I mean, it’s clear that she chose Greg. That we can agree on. She loved the man, and he loved her, and they had a son! (And he’s made of love!!)
But did she choose Greg over Pearl? Mmm ... yes and no.
Love is complex, and Rose’s situation was complex. ‘It’s Over Isn’t It’ told us that Pearl believes Rose chose Greg over her. And in a way, that may be true. Pearl very likely had a monogamous romantic relationship with Rose, until Rose met Greg and drifted from Pearl to focus her romantic attention on him.
But Rose could have still loved Pearl romantically even after she began dating Greg. ‘We Need To Talk’ could be read as just another love triangle, but I personally read it as the messy beginnings of a polyamorous relationship. Whereas Rose seemed accustomed to it, Pearl and Greg weren’t on the same wavelength and couldn’t understand eachother because they were indifferent to eachother’s species’.
I think things could have been a little different if Steven hadn’t happened. If Pearl and Greg had the friendship that they have now back when Rose was still alive, then I believe both of them could’ve dated Rose happily without such pettiness and jealousy toward eachother.
Steven was the one who helped them reach the friendship they have now through ‘Both Of You’. And it’s heavily hinted that it was also Rose’s way of helping them communicate and love eachother the way she wished they could have when she was still around. That’s a part of what makes ‘Both Of You’ so powerful, and one of my top 3 SU songs -- because it’s Rose telling Greg and Pearl that she loves them both. Why fight for her affection, even now long after she’s gone, when she loves them both so much?
In the end, she wanted to have Steven. And unfortunately, she wasn’t able to help Pearl and Greg reach that level of understanding before she passed on her gem to her son. And it’s sad. I think it’s the most bittersweet aspect of the show. But ‘Mr Greg’ gave me and many other fans closure. And I still consider those three to have one of the most beautiful relationships in modern television -- it was flawed, and real, and it continues, even long after Rose passed on.
Rose is homoromantic, pansexual, and polyamorous, and is in a relationship with a bisexual Greg, and an ace lesbian Pearl!
