This type of sword call a Piso Podang, was used by several Indonesian peoples in the 19th and early 20th century, primarily of the Batak group in northern Sumatra. It shows a couple of different foreign influences and comes from a time when the Batak had come under the influence of the Dutch.

My Iraqi friends who identified the Arabic inscriptions on the spline and the right side of this blade were puzzled by these inlays on the left side. They confirmed that they look like Arabic script, but they did not think the words were Arabic. That led us to speculate that perhaps this inscription is something in another language (Indonesian or Malaysian?) written in the Arabic alphabet.
