Summary: Bored out of your mind on a long road trip, you decide the best way to entertain yourself is by getting Joel's hands and mind off the wheel.

The hum of the truck's engine had been steady for hours, a low, constant vibration that made your eyelids feel heavy. It was somewhere past noon, the sun slanting in through the windshield, warm enough that you and your bare legs propped up on the dash, idly bouncing one foot to whatever was playing on the old radia.
Joel hadn't said much in the last half hour. Not unusual. He was focused on the road, one hand on the wheel, the other resting loose over his thigh. But you could see the little liens at the corner of his mouth, that faint crease that meant he was either deep in thought or trying not to let you see he was annoyed. You knew you were getting on his nerves. And you weren't sorry about it.
Your head titled, letting your eyes drag lazily over him. The rolled up sleeves of his flannel, the veins standing out on his forearms as he adjusted his grip. The slow flex in his thigh when he shifted gears. "Y'know," You said, your voice lifting with feigned innocence, "this trip would be a whole lot less boring if you weren't being so... uptight"
Joel didn't even look at you. "Ain't uptight. Just drivin'. "
You hummed like you didn't believe him.. "mmh. Sure. That why you've been avoiding looking at my legs for the last forty miles?" That got him. His jaw tightened and his eyes flicked towards you. Just for a second, but enough to make you smirk.
"Put your dam feet down," He muttered.
"Make me."
The corner of his mouth twitched, maybe irritation, maybe something else. You decided to push it. You shifted in your seat, turning just enough so the hem of your shorts crept higher. "Bet I could make you pull over if I really tried." Joel's knuckles whitened slightly sorid the steering wheel.. "Don't start somethin' you can't finish, darlin'"
"Oh, I always finish," You purred. "The question is... Do you?"
Joel's gaze stayed glued to the road, but you could see the pulse at his neck jump. You leaned in closer, your voice dropping low. "Bet I could you finish without even making you stop driving." Bjs breath came out though his nose, a short huff. "You're playin' with fire." You grinned, your hands already tracing on his thighs. "Guess we're gonna find out how hot it gets."
The leather seat squeaked beneath you as the engine's rumble vibrated through your hands as you dragged them slowly up his leg, feeling the muscle flex beneath the denim. Joel's grip on the wheel tightened. "You better think real hard about what you're doin', sweetheart."
"Oh, I've been thinking," You murmured, fingertips grazing the bulge straining against his jeans. "For about a hundred miles now." You popped the button open with one hand, your smirk widening when his hips shifted just slightly toward you. The zipper came down slow, just to hear his breath htch and pyu pushed the denim aside, freezing the heavy, thick length of him. God, he was already hard. Thick, veiny, flushed at the tip.
You wrapped your fingers around him, giviinga slow pump and he swore under his breath, low and rough.
"Eyes on the road, old man," You teased, tongue darting out to lick along the fine running up the underside. His jaw flexed. "Don't call me that right now."
"What, 'old man'?" You grinned wickedly and swirled your tongue around the head, tasting him, savouring the salty slick bead that had gathered there. "Does it make you feel old or just-" You took him deeper, cheeks hollowing, "-desprate?"
Joel's breath came harder now, the steady cadence of the truck wobbling slightly as his thigh tensed under your palm. You set a pace, slow at first, your tongue teasing every ridge and vein, then faster, wetter, your free hand sliding down to cup him where he was hottest. He cursed again, his hand leaving the wheel for just a second to curl into your hair. "Goddamn it, girl..." You hummed sorind him like that, the vibration making him groan and pulled back just enough to smirk up at him. "Thought you said not to start somebtimg i can't finish."
"Didn't say you could do it while I'm drivin'."
You went back down, taking him deeper this time, until he bit the back of your throat. The truck swerved just slightly, tires humming louder against the Pavement and you felt him swell in your mouth. His breathing turnwd rough, uneven. His right foot pressed heavier on the gas without him realizing. The speedometer ticked up past the limit.
"Shit-" He growled, his hips jerking despite himself, chasing your mouth. "Slow down- fuck-" you only doubled down, bobbing your head father, your hand twisting at the base, tongue working greedily. His thighs tightened sorind you, his knuckles white on the steering wheel.
Just when his voice dropped into that low, dangerous growl that meant he was about to lose it.
A sharp chirp of a siren cut through the cabin. Blue lights flashed in the side mirror.
Joel's entire body went rigid. "Fuck."
You pulled off of him with an obscene wet pop, licking your lips slow. "Oops."
Joel's muttering was low and deadly as he yanked himself back into his jeans, knuckling fumbling with the zipper. "Goddamn - fuckin'- " the truck wass already slowing, his eyes flicking between the rearview mirror and the shoulder of the road where the cruiser's lights pulsed. You were half in your seat, half still leaning on the console, wiping your mouth with the back of your hand, grinning like a cat who'd gotten into the cream. "This is so much better than being bored," You whispered, biting back a laugh. Joel shot you a glare that could've dropped a groan man. "Not. A. Word."
You leaned back against your seat, tugging your shorts down like you were the picture of innconcence, even as heat still buzzed between your legs. The cruiser's door slammed shut behind you. Boots crunched on the gravel. Sunglasses, badge, wide-brim hat, the whole deal. The officer stepped up to Joel's window, which he rolled down with forced calm.
"Afternoon, sir. You know why I pulled you over?"
Joel cleared his throat. "No, officer."
"You were doing seventy-five in a fifty-five zone." The cop glanced inside the cap, his gaze flicking between Joel and you. "Where you folds headed?"
You bit your lip hard to keep from smirking. Folks.
"Uh... Road trip," Joel muttered.
The cop's eyes stayed on you, his brow knitting. "Your daughter?"
Joel's hand visibly tightened on the wheel. "She's-"
"Yes," You cut in sweetly before he could speak. "That's my dad" Joel's head turned so fast you thought his neck might snap. His eyes screamed don't you dare. You only batter your lashes at the cop.
"Mhm," The officer grunted, leaning a little on the window frame. "Well, sir, as a father myself, I gotta say, your kid's safety oughta be your top priority. Can't be racing down the highway with precious cargo in the passenger seat.
Joel's jaw worked. "Yessir."
The cop shook his head like he was disappointed in him personally. "You keep an eye on her, y'hear? The world's full of... Unsavory types out there."
"Oh, he does," You chirped, letting the double meaning hang between you. Joel's knee jolted under the dash. The cop scribbled sometbing on his pad and tore off a slip, handing it to Joel. "That's your ticket. Drive safe. And slow down, your little girl's countin' on you."
Joel's nostrils flared but he took the paper with a tight nod. "Appreciate it, officer." When the cop finally walked back to his cruiser, you waited exactly two seconds before snorting. Then you were laughing so hard you doubled over, counting your stomach. Joel pulled back onto the road in silence. Dangerous silence. "Oh my god," You wheezed between giggles. "Daddy, watch your speed!" His hand shot out, gripping the back of your neck, hauling you close enough for you to feel his breath on your ear. "Soon as we find the next motel," He growled, "you're not walkin' straight for a week." You only grinned wider, "better keep it under the speed limit then, huh... Dad?"

It happened fast.
Too fast.
One moment, you were walking through the ruins of a small abandoned town, your child nestled between the two of you, tiny fingers clinging to your coat, babbling softly, unaware of the danger that always followed. And then...
The scream.
Joel turned first, rifle raised. But the runner came out of nowhere, foaming at the mouth, half of it's face gone, arms flailing. It wasn't supposed to be that close. You hadn't heard it. None of you had.
You heard the bite.
A wet, sickening sound.
Then a cry.
Not yours, not Joel's...
Hers.
Your baby.
Joel shot it, too late. Too fucking late. He fired again, screaming this time and when the runner collapsed, blood and brains across the concret, you dropped to your knees. "No- no no no no no," You were whispering. Screaming. Shaking. "No- god- no- baby, baby- look at me, look at me!-"
But her little body had already gone limp. There was blood on her neck. Sleeve. Her mouth. Joel dropped beside you, hands shaking, muttering sometbing over and over again, but you couldn't hear it. You couldnt hear anything. All you could see was your little baby girl, your little miracle, laying in your arms with empty eyes.
You were screaming now. Wailing.
"No-please- don't take her, don't take her too!! Joel! Do something!!!"
Joel's face broke.
Cracked open like a glass under a boot.
He reached out, pulled you close, wrapped his arms around you and the baby both. He you like he could keep you from falling apart. But he was shaking, sobbing into your hair, his voice shredded and raw. "I'm sorry. I'm fuckin' sorry, baby- should've- should've protected her- should've been faster-" you collapsed against him, the child's body between you, cold and too quiet. "She was just a baby," You sobbed. "Our baby- our baby- what do we do now, joel?"
Joel didn't answer.
He just rocked you.
The three of you in the dirt.
You.
Him.
And the little life you both created and couldn't save.
~~~
One year later, Jackson, Wyoming.
The snow outside had quieted hours ago, muffling the town in the soft white. Streetlights blinked through the curtain of flurries like dying stars, and Jackson safe, structured Jackson, slept under it's heavy blanket.
But Joel miller didn't sleep.
Not really.
He dozed. Drifted.
And he dreamed.
It always started the same way, the echo of that scream. Too small. Too real. He would turn, too slow, his boots catching on the gravel, gun not raised in time, again. He would see the bite. Hear you scream. Feel his baby girl's weight going limp in his arms. "Joel- Joel, do something- please!-"
And then nothing.
Silence so sharp it shattered bim.
He shot up in bed, gasping, chest heaving like someone had crushed it. The sheets clung to his sweat drenched skin, tangled around his legs like veins. His eye darted around the dark room. "Baby?" He croaked, voice dry and ragged.
No answer.
His heart thudded like a war drum. He reached across the bed with trembling fingers. Cold, empty, no warmth, no weight beside him...
"Baby-" He called again, louder now, frantic, stumbling out of bed with bare feet hitting the cold woof.
The bosi was too quiet.
Too familiar.
Too still.
He moved like a man possessed, checking the bathroom, the hall. His lungs were right. Breath shallow.
God, no- don't let her be gone too.
Not her. Not her.
"(your name)?" His voice cracked. Broke.
He was halfway down the stairs when he heard it, the quiet clink of a glass, a cabinet closing.
He turned the corner and saw you. Bathed in soft fridge light, your hair messy from sleep, a blanket draped around your shoulders. A glass of water in one hand. Eyes wide when you loowd up and saw him. Wrecked, standing barefoot in the doorway like a man who'd clawedout of the earth.
"Joel?" You whispered, already moving to him.
He didn't speak.
Didn't breathe.
Just reached for you like he wasn't sure you were real.
You caught him before he fell, wrapping your arms around him just as his knees gave out, sinking to the kitchen floor with him cradled against you. "I couldn't find you," He choked into your shoulder. "You weren't there. I tbought- fuck, I thought-"
"I'm here," You whispered, pressing your face into his hair. "I'm here, baby. I'm not going anywhere " his hands fisted the back of your shirt, clinging so hard it hurt. His whole body shook as he buried his face in your neck, breath stuttering like he couldn't get enough air. "I can't lose you too. I can't. I can't fuckin' do it." You pulled him tighter, guiding his head to your chest, letting him listen to the steady beat of your heart. "I'm not leaving you, Joel" You said softly. "You hear me? I'm not going anywhere."
His tears soaked through your shirt.
And still you held him.
Held him like you held your baby that day. Only this time, you weren't letting go. You sat on the floor for a long time, wrapped in silence and each other. The glass of water long forgotten. The lights from outside flickering faintly on the walls like ghosts passing by.
Eventually, you guided him back upstairs, hands steady, fingers laced with his. He let you lead. Let you tuck him into bed like he was the fragile one. You curled around him, his arms tight around your waist,face pressed to your collarbone. He breathed you in like it grounded him, like it brought him back to life. "You promise?" He whispered into your skin. "Promise me you ain't goin' anywhere..."
You kissed his temple, your voice quiet. "I Promise."
Outside, the wind howled.
Inside, you rocked slowly. Just the two of you, like always. No one else. Nothing else. No baby between you this time, just the space where grief lived and love refused to die.
Joel clung to you like a man who had finally understood that love didn't mean safety.
It meant surviving anyway.
And sometime before dawn, his tears dried.
You both drifted off, tangled in warmth, and memory, and the fragile, precious quiet of still being here.
