Pay it forward

Or give back if that is an easier way to remember. I recently had the opportunity to complete training to become a certified Peer Specialist. Saying it was training is doing the experience an injustice because I learned so much about the many obstacles everyone in that room overcame to be in the position they are now....and that is to give back! We all get to give back to our communities by supporting those who starting on their wellness path to recovery from drugs, alcohol, and metal health problems. I encourage everyone who has ever struggled in any area of life...big or small, to reflect on ways they can give back and help out another person.  I felt as excited and happy as my beautiful granddaughter pictured above. I go in to fill out paperwork for my new job on Tuesday. I'm so nervous. Being a peer specialist is a lot of responsibility and while I think I'll be good at it, there's that nervousness associated with the huge responsibility of taking care of members of vulnerable populations (even though I'm also a member of that population). After paperwork I have a 20ish hour training period and then I start working regularly. This is a real adult job and I don't feel like a real adult.

Big news

I was just hired as a Certified Peer Specialist working at a mental health non-profit in a supportive living environment. I am so excited to be able to use my training to help my peers with their recovery journeys! (also, I don't need to be as worried about rent anymore) WHoo!!!!

I am certified as a mental health and substance abuse recovery peer specialist in the state of WI, and I just interviewed for a job at a drop-in and crisis center! I just need to wait for them to talk to my job references and then hopefully I get a second interview! I know I can pass a background check, and if they drug test I can pass that!
