Julie Pelckmans Interview

Julie Pelckmans is an animation student in Hochschule Luzern - Design und Kunst (Lucerne School of Arts and Design). She recently finished her first semester. For the upcoming semester, she will specialize in Stopmotion. 

Within the next three weeks, she is required to design, model, and rig a character, which will then be animated into multiple personalized walk cycles. The character will be 30 cm tall made out of PU (Polyurethane) Foam. The hands and feet will be made out of silicone. The character will be metal-like and have a stage outfit. She originally thought of making a character with long hair and by using a similar method as LAIKA, where they add silicon to real hair. But as usual, that may pose problems as well. 

Between the 2D, 3D, and stopmotion, Julie enjoys all three animation techniques for different reasons. However, she chose stopmotion because it is the type of animation where she feels closest to the models she is animating. She has the best feel for animation through stopmotion. For her, she best finds the best specific speed and "flowiness" to her animation when she can see everything three-dimensionally in front of her. She's still not sure what to do but she enjoys the feel of moving her puppet. There is also this type of realism in stopmotion animation despite the world being stylized. She loves how the audience can see every little detail of the character, but at the same time can see all the little mistakes as well. Nonetheless, Julie looks forward to tackling the challenges to make her character a reality.

Stopmotion

A documentation of my work for a stopmotion project. The story is about a farmer that comes across a conscious, living turnip.

I worked on the project with two others: @sangonomori and @pelckij. Sango and I worked on the background while Pelcki focused on the character. I made the hills and foundation for the set. Sango and I worked together on the turnips.
