A confession. In retrospect I have realised this photo may not in fact be of myself playing triplet builds which I described last post. I suspect this was taken during the verses of “I’m Ready”, the first song of Chris’s set. I remember Dave Holland taking pictures on his mobile during the song. In which case I would be pounding out dramatic, over blown unison accents on snare and floor tom instead. Not that I didn't play any triplet builds - they would have been in abundance during the whole set as they are a staple of blues drumming. I read of them being referred to as “straights” in Daniel Glass's book on Early R&B Drumming and there's plenty of variations - I know ‘cos I play ‘em all. So accents not straights on snare and floor tom.
