Battle of Sphacteria 425 BC by Mpyromaxos Via Flickr: This is my entry to the 2017 The Colossal Battle Contest V for the category . CBC V - Dread Ambushers Category www.flickr.com/groups/1989840@N23/discuss/72157684436745573 I choose to create a great battle from the ancient Hellenic Wars, known as Peloponnesian War. A small force of Spartan army was cutted from their main army of Sparta by Athenian army and their navy on the island of Sphacteria. The Athenian forces manage to land on the island after a surprise attack and forced the Spartans to surrender! It's one of the few times that a Spartan army was surrendered and did not fight until death. I hope you like it! C&C are appreciated! History The Battle of Sphacteria was a land battle of the Peloponnesian War, fought in 425 BC between Athens and Sparta. Following the Battle of Pylos and subsequent peace negotiations, which failed, a number of Spartans were stranded on the island of Sphacteria. A force under Cleon and Demosthenes landed in great force on a weakly defended point. The Athenians swamped the beachfront defenses and moved inland, harassing the Spartans with missile fire whenever they attempted to come to grips with the Athenian hoplites. The Spartans retreated to the northern end of the island and dug in behind their fortifications, but when the Messenian general Comon succeeded in bringing his troops through seemingly impassable terrain into their rear, the Spartans surrendered. The capture of over 292 hoplites (120 of which were Spartans) by Athens radically shifted the balance of power in the war. Immaculate autumn vibes from the Thracian plains.
The Styx a) won’t be finished for a while and b) involves a lot of dark, moody colours, so I’m keeping the mind fresh with little palate cleansers like this Thracian from Footsore Minis.
On Mondays we wear yellow.

The view to my immediate left features a lot of stabby spears.
Rude, crude skirmishing dudes. I wanted these guys to serve as lower-status skirmishers, which doesn’t mean no fancy patterns allowed but does mean I went for more natural or neutral colours - cheaper dyes!
