What is PID?
PID stands for "Pelvic Inflammatory Disease." It is a serious infection of the female reproductive organs, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. PID is typically caused by untreated or undertreated sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhea but can also result from other infections. Common symptoms include lower abdominal pain, fever, unusual vaginal discharge, painful intercourse, and irregular menstrual bleeding. PID can lead to severe complications like infertility, chronic pelvic pain, and ectopic pregnancies. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment with antibiotics are crucial to prevent these complications.
