One of the things I loved about Skam Austin that I don’t really get from the other remakes is how full and chaotic the world is outside of the main character. You just got the sense that stuff was happening to other people all the time even when we weren’t hearing about it, because they’d give us glimpses, half stories, sometimes throw away sentences that just fed into it all.
Tyler opened the second season making out in the hall with a boy we’d never seen before, and then we never saw him again. But we don’t learn what happened to him because Grace didn’t know Tyler, so why would she have a chance to learn that information? Jo2 apparently had a whole relationship saga in the background filled with hope and heartbreak and we never learned what actually happened between them, because that’s just how it turns out sometimes!
A lot of the other versions, og included, will give us stories about the other characters but there tends to be more of a resolution to them. Even if we don’t know the whole story there’s often a moment where a character will give us a few lines of explanation that give us an idea of the shape of things at least. With Austin there was just stuff happening in the background all the time that we were never meant to get even a fraction of the whole picture on and I don’t know, to me it felt exactly how high school did.
