Here is the result, a heatsink, a fan, and a few LEDs. The COB panel is 12v, so that just tied right to the 12v dc. But the fan was only 5v, and that's a lot of power to resist down. So I thought, what else can I use 7 spare volts for? 2 blue LEDs is ~6.4v, that will do. As you can see I just wired the LEDs in between the fan and the power supply. Worked great. With the heat sink the internal temp hasn't passed 60 degrees.
The heat sink is held away from the plastic about 1mm by 2 2mm steel rods secured in place with JB Weld.
The visible contacts on the front have been covered in epoxy to protect the user/device. ...although I suppose I could have created a cover plate, but I was worried about it melting...
