Review - Penguin 80 Number 4 - Thomas De Quincey - On Murder Considered As One of the Fine Arts

Well my readers it has been a while since my review of The Saga of Gunnlaug the Serpent Tongue and for that I apologise. I have continued to read the little beauties however so I have a nice collection which should stream out over the next few days. This one I found a hard read. The concept is quite entertaining, there is a group of men in London who delight in the art of murder as other men might delight in the release of a new Sherlock Holmes short story. What follows is a lecture based on the killer John Williams. It is part murder mystery (although you already know whodunit!) part discussion of what makes a good murder victim. It is in this sense rather macabre and all in all rather odd. However I did enjoy it and if you are into your murder mysteries it is certainly designed to give you a tinge of guilt about what it is you find so entertaining.
