As an aspie, i struggle with relationships (friendships, romantic, platonic, work partnerships) and reading people and their intentions. For this, i created a short list of general rules to help me avoid confusion, conflict, and mostly, being constantly broken hearted.
1. If someone does not actively show their appreciation/ affection /love for you, then they most likely don't love you. Stop trying to show your love for them.
2. If someone does not actively seek for your company, they do not want it. Stop seeking theirs.
3. If someone never checks up on you, they are not interested in knowing how you are. Stop checking up on them or updating them about what is going on with you.
4. If someone constantly brings you down or makes you feel inadequate, stop making efforts to please them or seek their approval.
5. If someone calls you their friend but never includes you in activities or outings with friends, then you are only acquaintances.
6. Know your own worth and be kind to everyone, but do not expect them to reciprocate.
7. Establish clear, healthy limits about how much of yourself you are willing to offer to others, and know when to say no without fear or guilt.
8. Remember that anything that is not mutual becomes toxic and abusive.
9. Seek the friendship of those who accept you as you are, recognize your virtues, forgive your faults, and feed your soul.
10. ALWAYS go with your gut. If something feels not right, if something is making you unhappy, walk away.
